T-FORCE M200 Portable SSD 1TB Review

Portable SSDs are getting faster and smaller, but there is still a useful balance to be found between outright speed, portability, durability, and capacity. The T-FORCE M200 Portable SSD 1TB aims to hit that balance with up to 1,800MB/s read speeds, a lightweight 83-gram design, USB-C connectivity, and a rather distinctive military-inspired exterior.

I have been using the 1TB model, and while there are certainly faster portable SSDs out there, I feel like the T-FORCE M200 has the right balance if you want something fast enough for gaming and everyday storage without carrying around a particularly heavy external drive.

Inside the box, you get the T-FORCE M200 Portable SSD itself and a USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable. Even the included cable follows the rugged approach of the drive. It feels thick and protective rather than like one of those thin USB-C cables you might be tempted to replace immediately.

Some may find the cable a little short, especially depending on where the USB-C port is positioned on a desktop PC (might dangle around the back), but I actually don’t mind the length. For a portable drive, the shorter cable is easier to pack and carry around without having a long cable tangled inside your bag. Plus, you’ll most likely plug this into a laptop than a desktop PC.

T-FORCE M200 Portable SSD Design and Build Quality

The M200 has one of the more distinctive designs I’ve seen on a portable SSD. TEAMGROUP says its design was inspired by the M200 sniper rifle, with elements such as Picatinny rail motifs incorporated into the body. Thankfully, it doesn’t look like someone simply made a storage device and covered it with random military decorations. There is definitely a rugged, tactical look to it, but the design still has enough restraint that it looks professional sitting next to a laptop or desktop PC.

The drive measures 105 x 55.5 x 11mm and weighs just 83 grams, which makes it easy to carry around. That weight is one of the things I particularly like about the M200. I also have a SanDisk portable SSD capable of roughly twice the transfer speed, but that unit weighs around 172 grams. That is more than double the weight of the M200.

There is obviously a performance advantage with a faster drive, but portable storage isn’t always about chasing the highest benchmark number. If I’m carrying a gaming laptop, charger, mouse, and various accessories around already, having an external SSD weighing just 83 grams is definitely appreciated. Especially when you are flying budget airlines that only gives you 7kg.

There is also a military-style hanging hole on the M200 if you want to attach it to a bag or other equipment.

The drive feels sturdy and well protected in the hand. TEAMGROUP says the M200 can survive a two-metre drop, although I didn’t deliberately throw my review unit onto the floor to verify that claim. Still, judging purely from its construction, the M200 certainly feels like it should handle everyday knocks and bumps better than many minimalist portable SSDs.

USB-C and Up to 1,800MB/s Transfer Speeds

The 1TB T-FORCE M200 is rated for sequential read speeds of up to 1,800MB/s and write speeds of up to 1,500MB/s. For reference, the 250GB version has a slightly lower rated write speed of up to 1,400MB/s, while the 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB models are rated at up to 1,500MB/s.

I tested the 1TB M200 on my desktop PC equipped with an Intel Core i7-14700K, 32GB of Kingston DDR5 memory, and a GIGABYTE Z790 AERO G motherboard. Using CrystalDiskMark, I was able to reach the advertised read performance of around 1,800MB/s.

That is always good to see because advertised SSD speeds represent best-case performance, and your results can vary depending on the system, USB controller, workload, and connection being used. More importantly, I don’t think most people buying this drive will find 1,800MB/s restrictive.

For gaming, moving files around, carrying media libraries, or storing large video files, it is already very fast. You can certainly buy portable SSDs capable of considerably higher speeds, but whether you actually need that extra performance depends on what you’re doing with them.

Temperature and Cooling

TEAMGROUP uses a dual-metallic structure combined with its graphene cooling technology inside the M200 to help dissipate heat. The drive does get warm during use. When I ran CrystalDiskMark repeatedly, the M200 became noticeably hot to the touch. That’s not particularly surprising when you’re pushing a compact SSD through sustained high-speed reads and writes, but it’s something worth mentioning.

During normal everyday use, however, temperatures have been perfectly fine. When I’m simply storing games, accessing files, or using the drive as external storage rather than continuously hammering it with benchmarks, the temperature hasn’t been something I’ve worried about.

The exterior design also serves a purpose. Those rail-inspired ridges give the enclosure additional surface area, helping it dissipate heat rather than simply being a visual design element.

A Great Companion for a Gaming Laptop

One of the main reasons I’ve found the T-FORCE M200 particularly useful is my GIGABYTE AORUS 15G gaming laptop. My configuration only has 512GB of internal storage, and that doesn’t go very far anymore. Modern games can easily consume tens or even hundreds of gigabytes each (Call of Duty?). Once Windows, applications, and a few large games are installed, 512GB suddenly feels surprisingly small.

I recently found myself trying to keep games such as Diablo IV, Overwatch, and Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced available at the same time – and that is impossible here. Rather than constantly deleting one game so I can install another, I can now move games and other large files onto the T-FORCE M200.

When I want access to them again, I simply plug the drive into the laptop through USB-C. It is a simple solution, but a very useful one.

The drive also supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome OS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox platforms. On PS5, it can be used to play and store PS4 games or archive PS5 games, making the M200 useful beyond PC storage.

With capacities ranging from 250GB all the way up to 4TB, you can also choose based on how large your portable game or media library needs to be. I think the 1TB model I have is a particularly practical capacity for portable use because it gives you considerably more breathing room without going overboard (and would be cheaper than the 2TB and 4TB models).

The T-FORCE M200 Portable SSD (1TB) manages to combine fast portable storage with a rugged design without becoming overly bulky or heavy. I particularly like its 83-gram weight. Having used faster portable SSDs that weigh considerably more, I think the M200 hits a really useful balance between performance and portability.

Its military-inspired styling will probably attract gamers in particular, but it doesn’t look excessively flashy. The build feels sturdy, the bundled USB-C cable feels equally durable, and the claimed two-metre drop resistance adds some extra reassurance even though I wasn’t brave enough to deliberately test it.

When a 512GB internal SSD isn’t enough for several modern games at once, being able to keep a 1TB external SSD in my bag while I travel overseas or interstate, and plug it in whenever needed is far easier than constantly uninstalling and downloading games again.

There are faster portable SSDs available, but for gaming, content storage, backups, and everyday file transfers, the T-FORCE M200’s combination of 1,800MB/s performance, rugged construction, and very low weight makes it an excellent portable storage option.
