Samsung has announced two new portable SSDs at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, Germany: the P9 and P7, both featuring USB4 connectivity. The headline figure here is the P9’s sequential read speed of up to 4,000MB/s, which is roughly double what the previous generation T9 managed over USB 3.2 Gen 2×2.
The P9 is Samsung’s first 8TB portable SSD with USB4, and it’s clearly aimed at content creators and professionals who work with large files. It supports 12K direct recording and is built for RAW image and high-resolution video workflows, with sequential write speeds reaching up to 3,800MB/s. For context, the 4TB T9 topped out at 2,000MB/s on both read and write, so the jump is meaningful. The P9 also picked up a CES 2026 Innovation Award, which suggests Samsung has been planning this launch for a while.
The more everyday-friendly P7 also runs on USB4 and is designed to work across a broad range of devices including laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles, and cameras. It’s gone through 2-metre drop testing along with shock and vibration durability testing, which is reassuring if you’re the type to throw a drive into a bag and forget about it.
We’ve had hands-on time with a few Samsung portable SSDs over the years, and build quality has generally been solid. It’ll be interesting to see whether the P9 can sustain those peak speeds under real-world load.
The P Series will be available in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB capacities, with a global rollout starting 31 August. Australian pricing hasn’t been confirmed yet, but availability details for Australia are expected to follow. Keep an eye on the Samsung Australia website for updates.
