ASUS Republic of Gamers has opened pre-orders for its latest gaming handhelds, the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, developed in partnership with Xbox. Both devices are available for pre-order with a global launch scheduled for October 16.
The two models cater to different gaming needs and budgets. The ROG Xbox Ally serves as the entry point at A$999, while the ROG Xbox Ally X targets performance enthusiasts at A$1,599. Pre-orders can be placed through the Microsoft Store, ASUS e-Shop, and participating retailers across Australia.
Both handhelds run Windows 11 and offer access to games from multiple PC storefronts in a single aggregated library. The design focuses on ergonomics and a full-screen gaming experience that bridges console and PC gaming conventions.
The ROG Xbox Ally runs on an AMD Ryzen Z2 A Processor, prioritising energy efficiency for extended gaming sessions. According to ASUS testing on pre-release hardware, this translates to up to 20% performance improvements in titles like Forza Horizon 5 and Gears of War: Reloaded compared to the previous ROG Ally generation. Battery life sees substantial gains too, with up to 110% more endurance versus the ROG Ally X.
The higher-end ROG Xbox Ally X features the new AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme Processor, delivering more substantial performance gains. ASUS reports up to 30% better performance in demanding titles such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Doom: The Dark Ages when compared to the previous-generation ROG Ally X. Battery improvements are equally notable, with the device lasting up to twice as long when playing games like Hollow Knight: Silksong.
Both processors support AMD’s Radeon software suite, including FidelityFX Super Resolution, Radeon Super Resolution, and AMD Fluid Motion Frames frame generation. The latter technology can boost frame rates by up to 60% for smoother gameplay.
The ROG Xbox Ally X includes an onboard NPU (Neural Processing Unit), which currently has limited use in games but positions the device for future AI-enhanced gaming features as developers begin implementing these technologies more widely.
The collaboration between ROG and Xbox brings together hardware expertise and software optimisations from both companies. Windows and Xbox-specific optimisations contribute to the generation-over-generation improvements in both performance and battery efficiency.
