The wait for Grand Theft Auto VI is almost over, with Rockstar Games confirming that players can begin pre-downloading the highly anticipated game on 10 November 2026, ahead of its official launch on 19 November.
However, there’s something you might want to check on your PlayStation 5 before then: your available storage space.
According to PlayStation’s official announcement, Grand Theft Auto VI requires a whopping 212GB of free storage space on the PS5. That’s a significant amount of storage for a single game, especially if you’ve already filled your console with other AAA titles.
Considering the scale of Grand Theft Auto VI, its massive open world, and the level of detail we’ve seen in the trailers so far, the large storage requirement isn’t entirely surprising. Still, 212GB is a lot, and I imagine quite a few players will need to delete some existing games to make room.
For those who have already pre-ordered Grand Theft Auto VI digitally, pre-downloads will begin at midnight local time on Tuesday, 10 November. This gives players nine days to download the game before its official release, which should be particularly helpful for anyone with a slower internet connection.
Pre-downloading also means you won’t have to download the entire game on launch day. Assuming everything is ready and there are no additional updates required, you should be able to start playing as soon as Grand Theft Auto VI officially unlocks on 19 November.
If you’re running low on storage, now would be a good time to check which games and applications you no longer need. On the PS5, you can head to Settings, then Storage, to see what’s taking up space and remove games you aren’t currently playing.
Alternatively, if you don’t want to delete anything, you can consider expanding your PS5’s internal storage with a compatible M.2 SSD. Sony has a support guide on PS5 storage expansion if you’re considering that option. We’ve also reviewed a few M.2 SSD here at Craving Tech that you can check for expanding your PS5 storage (I’m still using the CORSAIR MP600 PRO).
Sony also recommends ensuring your PlayStation account is properly set up before launch, particularly if you’re new to the platform. Those purchasing the game digitally can check their pre-order and automatic download settings so the console can download the game when pre-loading becomes available.
Grand Theft Auto VI will be available in Standard and Ultimate Editions, with the latter including additional in-game content such as premium vehicles, weapons, and apparel connected to Jason and Lucia’s story.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with pre-downloads beginning on 10 November.
