Wireless charging technology for gaming peripherals has always been something I’ve kept an eye on, and Logitech’s original POWERPLAY system was groundbreaking when it first appeared (check my review on it back in 2017). Now, with the announcement of POWERPLAY 2, Logitech G has refined what was already a clever solution for keeping your gaming mouse perpetually charged during those marathon gaming sessions.
The new POWERPLAY 2 wireless charging system promises to solve one of the most annoying issues for gamers – having your wireless mouse die mid-game. There’s nothing worse than being in the middle of a competitive Overwatch 2 match only to have your mouse battery indicator flashing red. This new system ensures your compatible Logitech G mouse stays charged whether it’s sitting still or being frantically moved during gameplay.
Slimmer Design, Better Performance
What immediately stands out about the POWERPLAY 2 is its significantly thinner profile. At just 3.5mm thick, it’s much more comfortable to use than the previous generation. Thicker charging pads can create an awkward wrist position during extended gaming sessions, so this redesign addresses a genuine pain point.
The charging area has also been expanded by 15%, making it more forgiving if you tend to move your mouse across a wide area while gaming. This means more consistent charging regardless of your playing style or desk setup.
How It Actually Works
The technology behind POWERPLAY 2 is rather clever. It generates a low-frequency electromagnetic field across the mousepad which is then captured by the POWERPLAY 2 Charging Coin that you insert into your compatible Logitech G mouse. This allows continuous charging without compromising the performance of Logitech’s LIGHTSPEED wireless technology.
What I appreciate about this system is its simplicity – you just plug in the charging pad, insert the Charging Coin into your mouse, and that’s it. No need to dock your mouse or position it in a specific way when not in use. It charges while you’re actively using it, which is the whole point.
Compatibility and Flexibility
One of the most practical aspects of the POWERPLAY 2 system is that the Charging Coin can be swapped between different compatible mice. This means you can change your mouse based on the game you’re playing (MOBA vs FPS for example) or your personal preference without needing multiple charging systems.
The system now works with 10 different Logitech G mice models, giving gamers plenty of options to find a mouse that suits their grip style and feature preferences while still benefiting from the continuous charging capability.
Price and Availability
The Logitech G POWERPLAY 2 will hit major retailers starting March 11, 2025, with a price tag of A$199.95. While this isn’t cheap, it’s actually more affordable than the original system was at launch, making this innovative technology accessible to more gamers.
For serious gamers who spend hours at their desk, having one less thing to worry about – your mouse battery – might well be worth the investment. Being able to completely forget about charging your mouse and just focus on your game are just plain awesome.
