Expand the storage of your Lightning/microUSB/USB Type-C devices with a nifty solution from Lexar

Lexar JumpDrive M20i-1

Lexar JumpDrive M20/M20i/M20c Flash Drive Review – The Lexar JumpDrive M20 series is a USB 3.0 Flash Drive with two connectors. The M20 has a microUSB connector, M20i has a Lightning connector, and the M20c has a USB Type-C connector. As you may have guessed already, they are flash drives meant to be plugged to a compatible device. So if you have the latest Nexus 5X with a USB Type-C connector, you should grab the M20c, and so on.

Since I use my iPhone 6s as my primary phone, I’ll share my experience with the Lexar JumpDrive M20i which has the Lightning connector on the other side (but they all pretty much have similar features).

We’ve all heard how limited Apple iPhone is in terms of expandable storage. Need a bigger storage? Then you better hope you actually bought either a 64GB or 128GB iPhone. iPhone has no expandable SD or microSD slot like most Android phones, and iPhone owners are stuck with what they’ve got.

Unless, of course, if you have the Lexar M20i in your possession. It’s a USB flash drive for the iPhone, to say it in the simplest way possible. It instantly expands the storage of your iPhone so you can have more stuffs like photos and videos accessible on the go.

The design is capless, making it easy to switch between the 2 different connectors and of course, we know often we lose our USB Flash Drive cap, right? The size is fairly small and flat, compared to similar solution from other manufacturers. This makes it easy to put inside your pocket.

Expandable, Dynamic Storage

Going for a holiday and taking lots of photos and videos of the whole trip? You’ll find that you will be running out of iPhone storage anytime soon. However, if you plug the M20i in, you can move all your media to it, so you can have more free space on the iPhone to take more photos and videos for the day. It’s gold.

Media On The Go

If you are traveling by plane, you can also fill the Lexar M20i with your favorite TV series, Anime, videos, or music collection from your computer to enjoy while you are in-flight. Simply plug the Flash Drive to your iPhone or iPad, and watch the videos with the Lexar JumpDrive free app (once you plug the drive in, it will automatically ask you to either download or open the app with on-screen notification. Neat).

Easy Backup/Restore

One of the cool features of the Lexar M20i combo with the app is the backup and restore. You can set it to backup your photos instantly and also your contacts. Sure, you’ve probably got it synced with Apple iCloud service, but having an offline secondary backup doesn’t hurt, right?

The app also features premium options to back up other services like Facebook Album, etc. These are really handy, especially if you are heavily-infested in social media and definitely need to do an easy backup of your uploaded photos on Instagram, for example.

Easy to use, Fast Speed, No battery to fiddle with

Unlike Kingston MobileLite Wireless G2 that connects via Wi-Fi Access Point, the Lexar M20i is just literally plug-and-play. There is also no battery to recharge so it will be no hassle for you.

The Lexar M20i transfer speed is also fast. Backing up hundreds of my photos on my iPhone only take minutes so it’s less time for you to wait til the process finishes.

Accessing files and media inside the drive is also instantaneous through the app, with no lag experienced.

Transferring files from your computer can be done via USB 3.0 which gives an approximate speed of up to 95MB/s read and 20MB/s write, according to Lexar. Using CrystalDiskMark software to benchmark on my own system, looks like it does have the claimed speed (different results caused by different systems like motherboard, USB 3 speed, etc).

Supported file formats that Lexar JumpDrive app can play include:

  • Music files: MP3/CAF/ACC/AIF/WAV/AIFF/M4A.
  • Video files: AVI/FLV/MP4/MOV/M4V/MKV/MPG/RM/RMVB/WMV.

Lexar JumpDrive M20i-7

The Lexar JumpDrive M20 series expand your device storage on the go without hassle, thanks to their compact size and plug-and-play mechanism. They allow you to transfer media files from your computer without pesky cables to carry, and the files are accessible as soon as you plug one into your microUSB, USB Type-C, or Lightning devices. It also provides an easy backup mechanism for backing up contacts, photos, and other online services like Facebook, Instagram, Calendar, etc (through in-app purchase).

With a variety of storage capacities available, you can get one to suit your needs and get more in the future, technically expanding the storage of your device without limit, as long as you have the money to get one.

Having these drives around are definitely handy – to whatever purpose you want them for.
