Overwatch 2 Season 3: Into the Tiger’s Den – New Hero Shion, Neon Junction Map, and More

Reign of Talon continues into Season 3, and this time Overwatch is taking you somewhere new: the neon-lit streets of Tokyo. Season 3: Into the Tiger’s Den launched on 17 June AEST and brings a new Damage Hero, a brand new Hybrid map, a seasonal event, fresh Mythic skins, and a new Ultra Skin tier — quite a lot to dig into.

New Hero: Shion

The headline addition this season is the new hero, Shion, leader of the Hashimoto Clan and one of the more interesting Hero concepts Blizzard has introduced in the Reign of Talon arc.

There was a rumour of this new hero that it’d feel like Cassidy with simple kits. Turns out, she’s no way like Cassidy and her kit is not simple. Shion uses dual pistols with a three-round firing and a cool reloading animation. She can dash through fights which makes her invisible for a brief period of time (so you can time this to evade an ultimate skill like D.Va’s bomb) while gaining a bit of health for survivability, and she can ride her motorcycle straight through the battlefield (no, this is not an emote, it’s a skill) – and then throw it at someone. Yes, the motorcycle is a projectile. It’s exactly as entertaining as it sounds and it feels like something that is not Overwatch-like.

She sits in the Damage role and plays into aggressive, flanker pressure. She’s not really “on-your-face” kind of hero like Vendetta or Anran but somewhere in the mid-range. Her ultimate is definitely really good and can wipe an entire enemy team if she’s not eliminated quickly.

She is super fun to play as, and the motorcycle adds a really cool flair to Overwatch, and doesn’t server as just cosmetics or an emote, thankfully. When all her skills connect, she can burst someone down quickly if left unchecked. Her motorcycle skill also makes her tricky as she can use it for a quick getaway.

New Hybrid Map: Neon Junction

Overwatch players have been asking for a new Hybrid map for a while, and Season 3 finally delivers one. Neon Junction is set in Tokyo.

The Hybrid format works naturally with the season’s story: you capture the initial zone in the middle of the city’s nightlife, then escort the payload toward Zuiko-za, where things get progressively darker as the Hashimoto Clan’s grip on the streets becomes more visible. Blizzard has tucked some Easter eggs and collectibles into locations like Hobby World and Capsule Hunt Go!, and the payload robot is a character called ANDROMEDA III from the fictional anime series Super Cosmic War: Star Infinite.

Anima Strike Event

Running from 16 June to 6 July, Anima Strike is a three-week seasonal event built around Neon Junction. As you play through the map, you push deeper into Hashimoto, Yokai, and Subway locations, each carrying lore tied to the unrest building beneath the city. Daily and weekly challenges move you through the map, and branching paths mean you’re making choices rather than just grinding through a linear track.

There are over 50 themed rewards to unlock, and once you clear the main path, a prestige path opens up for those who want to keep going.

Community Crafted Mode (June 30 – July 13)

Community Crafted is one of the more interesting additions this season. Four creators: Guxue, Ocie, Apply, and mL7support worked directly alongside Blizzard’s Hero team to design gameplay experiments for familiar Heroes.

The results are varied and fun to play. Guxue’s Reinhardt leans harder into aggressive brawler play. mL7support flips Baptiste’s Immortality Field into an Ultimate and makes Amplification Matrix more flexible. Apply’s version of Ashe gives B.O.B. a bigger presence while rewarding smart setup. Ocie revisits Sombra’s dive identity with more interactive counterplay around Hack.

This runs for two weeks so if you like to try it out, go for it.

New Mythic Skins

Two Mythics are available this season. Ascendant Phoenix Illari and Tokyo Rebel Hanzo’s Mythic Weapon skin. I know there are many Hanzo players out there, so it’s great to see that it’s his turn now for the fun.

Ultra Skins: A New Cosmetic Tier

Season 3 also introduces Ultra Skins, a new cosmetic tier that sits above standard Legendary skins in terms of production but sits below the Mythic Skins. The difference is that Ultra Skins combine custom sound suites, unique visual effects, kill effects, ambient animations, and smaller detail work to make Heroes feel more distinct throughout a match.

The two launch Ultra Skins are Nyan Cafe Kiriko and Nyan Cafe Sierra, both tied to the Nyan Cafe collection running from 23 June to 13 July. Kiriko’s version wraps her kit in playful cafe aesthetics with custom audio and kill effects, and Sierra’s take on the same theme adds a bit more bite. Whether Ultra Skins justify the price point will depend on how much you value audio and effects work over visual design alone, but as a new cosmetic category it’s a promising concept with room to grow.

Battle Pass and Season Highlights

The Season 3 Battle Pass is themed around lantern festivals and summer nightlife, with Legendary skins including Summer Festival Sombra, Summer Festival Freja, Matsuri Junkrat, Vigilante Genji, and Street Rebel Lúcio. The Ultimate Battle Pass adds Cyber Biker Shion and Cowpunk Cassidy.

The Street Rebels and Nyan Cafe shop collections are available for limited windows throughout the season, and the Excavation Initiative runs the full season, rewarding active players with up to 17 Loot Boxes plus one Epic and one Legendary simply for logging in, completing challenges, and winning games.

Stadium mode also receives a significant update this season, with reworks across most of the roster and larger changes to Hazard, Tracer, Kiriko, Sojourn, Doomfist, and others. Grouping Restrictions for Ranked are also being removed, and Oasis University joins the Stadium map pool.

I haven’t been playing the Stadium for a while (I was really hooked before Overwatch 2 was renamed to just Overwatch and had a Season restart to Season 1) but I’m looking forward to play again and try out the new heroes + rework.
