Nintendo Unveils Switch 2, Promises Enhanced Gaming Experience + You Can Register for a Hands-On Event!

Nintendo has officially announced the much-anticipated successor to its wildly popular hybrid console, the Nintendo Switch 2. Set for release later in 2025, this new console aims to improve gaming experience with several notable enhancements over its predecessor.

I still remember the original launch event of the original Nintendo Switch here in Melbourne like it was yesterday (I was invited by Nintendo Australia for the official launch in Melbourne) and then reviewed it. Definitely can’t wait to see what Nintendo Switch 2 has to offer.

The Nintendo Switch 2 retains the beloved hybrid nature of the original, allowing gameplay both in handheld mode and docked for TV play. However, this model introduces a larger screen, promising a more immersive visual experience. The Joy-Con controllers now feature magnetic attachment, a significant upgrade from the sliding mechanism of the current Switch, which should provide a more secure and user-friendly connection.

While the original Switch design is cool and has that satisfying click when you attach those Joy-Con controllers, I wouldn’t say no to an easier and more intuitive experience.

Additionally, the console is backward compatible with existing Switch games, ensuring that players can continue to enjoy their library of titles on the new hardware. This is great, for sure as you can still play your favourite games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Everybody 1-2-Switch, or Mario Strikers: Battle League Football. Make sure to check my reviews on those games while you’re here too.

Specific details on the internals remain under wraps until the upcoming Nintendo Direct event on April 2, 2025, but there’s buzz about improved hardware performance around the web. Leaks and rumors suggest advancements like better graphics processing, potentially supporting 4K in docked mode, and the inclusion of modern technologies like DLSS for AI-enhanced graphics upscaling. This could significantly enhance game visuals and performance, although fans are awaiting official confirmation and it’s better to wait for the official announcement from Nintendo themselves.

There are no revolutionary design change in a sense – but then again, I honestly don’t know what else they need to change. Fans love the Nintendo Switch design and what it offers, so perfecting on what’s already in store would be the better option.

There will also be a hands-on event around the world to experience Nintendo Switch 2 yourself, including in Melbourne (10th-11th of May 2025) – so make sure to register yourself if you want to check the new Switch out. You can register here.
