Facebook introduces 360-degree video support

Imagine watching a video where you have complete control on which angle you want to look at in the video. Sounds cool enough for you? If you are craving for a more immersive content on Facebook, the latest Facebook support for 360-degree videos might be for you.

With just a finger slide (on a smartphone) or a cursor slide with a mouse (on a PC), you can control the angle while a supported video is playing.

Unfortunately, it might be too early to create these 360-degree videos in your backyard or using your smartphone alone. To create a 360-degree video, you’ll need a special set of cameras to record all angles (360 degrees) simultaneously. Definitely not possible if you are just using a single smartphone you have with you. At least not at this stage (or ever).

This may sound like a gimmick to some, but big publishers have jumped ship in creating them for Facebook, like the Star Wars 360-degree video by Disney.

There are also the other publishers sharing 360 videos on Facebook like NBC’s Saturday Night Live. GoPro, Discovery, VICE, and LeBron James & Uninterrupted.

It may still be a while before we can fully untap the potential of 360-degree videos (3D videos are still trying to make their ways into our brain), but certainly an exciting moment in technology.
