Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Review – Intense, Brutal, and Visually Impressive

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 delivers an intense, visually stunning single-player campaign with a gripping storyline, brutal combat, and plenty of mission variety that keeps the action fresh from one mission to the next.

Call of Duty campaigns have always been known for their cinematic action sequences, intense firefights, and memorable set pieces. While multiplayer is arguably the main attraction for many Call of Duty players, I’ve always enjoyed the single-player campaigns for their storytelling and the opportunity to experience modern warfare from different perspectives.

With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, developer Infinity Ward takes the series into another major global conflict, this time beginning with a North Korean invasion of South Korea. The campaign also continues the story of Captain Price, who finds himself operating outside the system while pursuing his own mission.

One of the things I really like about Modern Warfare 4 is how the campaign begins and you’ll probably already see the clips circulating your social media feeds. The opening sequence is excellent. It sets the tone for what’s coming, introduces a conflict that feels somewhat relatable to real-world events, and immediately puts you on your toes.

Without spoiling anything, the story revolves around an escalating military conflict on the Korean Peninsula that eventually develops into something much larger. You’ll experience parts of the war from the perspective of South Korean soldiers, while Captain Price’s separate storyline adds another layer of intrigue – which I wouldn’t expect at the beginning. It all thanks to the great acting (and voice-acting) of Barry Sloane since 2019.

While this (North Korea’s invasion to South Korea) is a fictional scenario, the underlying tensions and military threats are familiar enough to make the events feel unsettling. There are things to consume at a slower pace as you are being transported to different perspectives in the story and then, there are the action bits.

Visually, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 looks fantastic. The environments are beautifully detailed, from the military equipment and weapons to the surrounding buildings, lighting, and battlefield effects. There’s a lot happening on screen during some of the bigger combat sequences, and the presentation really helps make you feel like you’re in the middle of a warzone.

I’m playing the game on my PC with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080, and I managed to push the graphics settings all the way to maximum somewhat. While the game certainly looks beautiful at these settings, I wasn’t getting the smoothest frame rates. The graphics settings menu also indicated that I was exceeding the available VRAM budget, which isn’t exactly ideal.

This meant that while my RTX 3080 could run the game with everything turned up, it wasn’t necessarily the best way to experience it if I wanted consistently smooth gameplay. And in a fast-paced first-person shooter such as Call of Duty, frame rates certainly matter, especially when you’re trying to react quickly to enemies or survive an intense firefight.

Still, I couldn’t help but appreciate how good the game looked. I can only imagine how impressive Modern Warfare 4 would be on a newer, higher-end graphics card with more VRAM and enough performance headroom to maintain high frame rates at maximum graphics settings.

If you’re playing on an older graphics card, you’ll probably want to find a balance between visual fidelity and performance rather than simply maxing everything out.

Call of Duty has never really been shy about showing the brutality of war, and Modern Warfare 4 is no exception. The campaign features some pretty violent moments, and even as someone who has played previous Call of Duty games, there were scenes that surprised me a little bit.

It’s not just about shooting enemies either. Some of the more intense sequences make the combat feel personal, uncomfortable, and occasionally shocking. The close-quarters encounters in particular can be quite brutal, with the action unfolding right in front of you rather than from a comfortable distance through a rifle scope.

I appreciate that the developers haven’t tried to make everything feel clean and sanitised. War is violent, after all, and the more disturbing moments help reinforce the seriousness of the conflict.

Of course, this also means the campaign isn’t necessarily for everyone, particularly those who are uncomfortable with graphic violence – or worse, have been through similar events in the past. But for players familiar with the Modern Warfare series, the darker tone certainly fits the experience.

One of the things I always enjoy about Call of Duty campaigns is how they rarely force you to do exactly the same thing for hours. Modern Warfare 4 continues this tradition with plenty of different mission types and gameplay scenarios.

You’ll experience the usual run-and-gun firefights where you’re pushing forward alongside friendly soldiers, taking cover, eliminating enemies, and trying to survive against overwhelming odds. But there’s much more to it than that. There are exciting vehicle chases, sniping sequences where patience and precision matter, stealth missions that encourage a quieter approach, and opportunities to provide helicopter support during larger combat operations.

The campaign constantly changes things up, and I think that’s one of its biggest strengths with the Call of Duty series. Just when you’re getting comfortable with one type of gameplay, the next mission introduces a different challenge or puts you in a completely different situation.

I also particularly enjoyed the one-on-one close combat encounters. These confrontations can be surprisingly fun and challenging at the same time. Rather than relying purely on your shooting accuracy, they put you into situations where timing, reactions, and quick decisions become just as important. These moments also provide a nice change of pace from the large-scale firefights where you’re constantly shooting at enemies from a distance.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Review Conclusion

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is another strong reminder of why I still enjoy playing Call of Duty campaigns, even with all the attention the franchise receives for its multiplayer experience. The campaign starts with an excellent opening sequence that immediately grabs your attention, backed by an interesting premise that feels somewhat relevant to the world we live in today.

The visuals are impressive, storyline is significantly better than some of the predecessors, combat is intense, while the variety of missions ensures that there’s rarely a dull moment. From traditional firefights and sniping to stealth operations, vehicle chases, helicopter support, and challenging close-quarters combat, there’s always something different to experience. I also quite like a fresh change of a mission where you need to collect supplies to get better weapons and gears in a small, open-world area.

If you enjoy cinematic military shooters with lots of action, impressive visuals, and a storyline that keeps you interested, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign is definitely worth playing.
