Logitech G522 Wireless Gaming Headset Review – Premium Audio with Tri-Mode Connectivity

The Logitech G522 Wireless Gaming Headset promises to deliver excellent performance as part of Logitech’s renowned G5 Series. With its 40mm PRO-G drivers, best-in-class microphone, and tri-mode connectivity options, this headset aims to provide everything serious gamers need for competitive and casual gaming sessions.

After spending several weeks with the G522, the headphone does deliver on its promises, offering a more budget-friendlier alternative compared to my favourite, the PRO X 2.

Unboxing and First Impressions

Inside the box, you’ll find the headset itself, a USB-A LIGHTSPEED wireless receiver, a USB-C charging cable, and documentation.

Design and Features

The G522 features Logitech’s signature gaming aesthetic with dynamic LIGHTSYNC RGB lighting across 8 customisable zones. The lighting is recessed nicely into the ear cup design, creating an attractive glow. With 16.8 million colours to choose from and various effects available through G HUB software, you can match your headset to any gaming setup.

The headband features a suspension design with ridges for better airflow, while the ear cups use dual layers of memory foam for comfort during extended gaming sessions. I find that the ear pads are quite large and they cover my ears (and those with bigger ears) completely. The materials feel durable, and there’s no creaking or flexing when adjusting the headset.

Comfort is where the G522 truly shines. The dual-layer memory foam ear cushions provide excellent comfort even during marathon gaming sessions. The ear cup shape feels natural and doesn’t create pressure points around your ears. The suspension headband distributes weight evenly, and at 290 grams, it’s light enough that you’ll forget you’re wearing it.

I’ve used the G522 for a few hours of gaming sessions playing Overwatch 2 and Stellar Blade without experiencing any discomfort or fatigue. The breathable materials and airflow design help prevent the sweaty ear syndrome that plagues many gaming headsets.

The microphone is also removable with its mute LED indicator. When you need to step away or don’t need voice chat, you can simply pop out the mic boom entirely. The red LED at the tip clearly shows when you’re muted, which is quite helpful to avoid embarrassment.

The 40mm PRO-G drivers deliver impressive audio quality across all types of content. In competitive or fast-paced first person shooter games like Overwatch 2, the spatial accuracy/audio positioning is excellent. I can pinpoint enemy footsteps, gunshots, and other crucial audio cues like enemies doing reloading with precision. The synchronised audio drivers help create a balanced soundstage where you can clearly distinguish between different audio layers.

For single-player games and media consumption, the G522 provides rich, detailed sound. The bass response is particularly noteworthy – it’s punchy and present without being overwhelming. Explosions in action games feel impactful, while music and dialogue remain clear and well-separated.

The frequency response of 20Hz-20kHz covers the full range of human hearing, and the 97dB sensitivity means these headphones can get plenty loud when needed. I rarely need to push the volume while playing my games with the headset.

The 48kHz bandwidth in the microphone provides broadcast-quality voice clarity and BLUE VO!CE technology adds another layer of customisation through G HUB software. You can adjust input gain, EQ settings, and use signal cleanup features to fine-tune your voice exactly how you want it. The sampler tool lets you hear how all your settings sound together, which is incredibly useful for finding your perfect voice profile.

The omni-directional pickup pattern does a good job of focusing on your voice while minimising background noise, though it’s not quite as effective as some dedicated noise-canceling microphones. I also can’t really test how good noise cancelling is in a noisy environment as I’m playing inside a small room with relatively small noise like the air conditioner’s hums.

The tri-mode connectivity is one of the G522’s strongest features. The LIGHTSPEED wireless connection provides rock-solid performance with up to 30 meters of range. I’ve never experienced dropouts or latency issues, even when moving around my house like grabbing a drink outside the room while connected.

Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity works seamlessly with mobile devices, allowing you to take calls or listen to music on your phone while maintaining your wireless gaming connection. The USB-C wired mode provides audio and data passthrough, which is useful for charging while playing or ensuring zero latency in competitive situations.

Battery life is excellent. With lighting disabled, you can expect up to 90 hours of use but even with default lighting enabled, the 40-hour battery life is more than enough for extended gaming sessions. The USB-C charging is fast, and you can continue using the headset while it charges if needed.

Logitech G522 Review Conclusion

The Logitech G522 Wireless Gaming Headset delivers on its promise. The combination of excellent audio quality, microphone performance with audio customisation, and versatile connectivity options makes it an excellent choice for serious gamers who do not need to get the most premium headset available.

The build quality (though looks plastic-y) and comfort are excellent, while the battery life offers long marathon sessions over the weekend. The audio positioning is also excellent that I can pinpoint enemies through walls and corridors in Overwatch 2 – which is very important for a gaming headset.

At its price point, the Logitech G522 represents excellent value for anyone seeking a premium wireless gaming headset that doesn’t compromise on any front. If you’re in the market for a high-end gaming headset with versatile connectivity and great audio performance, the G522 should definitely be at the top of your list. But if you really want the best of the best in Logitech G’s arsenal, the Logitech G PRO X 2 Wireless Gaming Headset (check my review) is still my favourite.

Logitech G522 is available now and retails for A$299.95. Also available at Amazon.com
