Dyson has announced the launch of the new Dyson PencilVac, a lightweight cordless vacuum at only 38mm diameter that’s packed with innovative technology. Available soon at Dyson Demo stores and Dyson.com.au, this represents the world’s slimmest vacuum cleaner design.
The standout feature is the new Fluffycones cleaner head with four conical brush bars that eject even long hair as you clean, preventing the frustrating tangles we’ve all experienced with traditional brush bars. The front brush bar cones rotate in one direction whilst the rear ones spin oppositely, creating a floating sensation across floors that cleans brilliantly forwards and backwards.
What makes this design particularly clever is how the four fluffy cones protrude at the sides to clean right up to skirting boards – something no other cleaner achieves quite like this. Laser-like illumination both front and back reveals invisible dust on hard floors, providing visible proof that all debris has been removed.
At just 1.8kg and 38mm diameter, the PencilVac is Dyson’s most manoeuvrable vacuum, capable of flattening to just 95mm height for cleaning under low furniture. It sounds like the perfect vacuum cleaner for those who hate bulky vacuum cleaners and for the elderly as well.
The engineering challenge of creating such a slim profile required developing Dyson’s smallest yet most powerful motor. I remember being in a presentation where a Dyson Engineer came from the UK to bring one of their motors and it was so small yet powerful. This looks to be even smaller by far.
The new Hyperdymium 140k motor measures just 28mm in diameter – about the size of a 20-cent coin – yet delivers 55AW of powerful suction whilst spinning at up to 140,000RPM. It’s 34% more power dense than its predecessor, with every component engineered to the micron for maximum efficiency.
The PencilVac features Dyson’s first two-stage linear dust separation system, capturing 99.99% of particles down to 0.3 microns without clogging filters or declining performance. The air-compressing bin design holds five times more dust than its 0.08L capacity suggests, whilst the hygienic syringe bin ejection system plunges dirt deep into the bin whilst wiping the shroud clean in one motion.
As Dyson’s first connected cordless vacuum, the PencilVac links to the MyDyson app for battery information and filter maintenance guidance. The LCD screen displays power mode and remaining run time, whilst the magnetic charging dock provides quick grab-and-go access with integrated tool storage.
Additional features include up to 30 minutes of fade-free suction with swappable battery packs available for extended run time, and a precision-engineered rotating combi-crevice tool for cleaning high, low, and awkward gaps.
