Dyson has just launched its first portable handheld fan in Australia, and it’s bringing some serious engineering credentials with it. The HushJet Mini Cool fan weighs just 212 grams but manages to deliver airflow speeds of up to 25 metres per second, thanks to a brushless DC motor that spins at up to 65,000 RPM.
This is Dyson’s answer to portable cooling, designed as a multi-functional device you can wear around your neck, place on your desk, or carry handheld. The 6-hour battery life should get you through a full day, whether you’re commuting, working at the office, or spending time outdoors during Australian summer.
The fan offers five adjustable airflow speeds plus a Boost mode for when you need maximum cooling power. You can dial it down for gentle airflow during work or travel, then crank it up for fast relief when temperatures climb.
There’s an interesting engineering thread running through Dyson’s recent products. The HushJet Mini Cool fan shares a 38mm diameter with the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer and the Dyson PencilVac, representing the company’s focus on making products smaller, lighter, and better performing. It’s about the diameter of a watch face, which gives you an idea of just how compact this fan actually is.
The HushJet projection system is where Dyson’s airflow research comes into play. The unique nozzle design focuses airflow efficiently while reducing turbulence, which means you get powerful cooling without the typical high-pitched whirring sound that smaller fans tend to produce.
Dyson has worked on lowering the frequencies and eliminating the whining motor sounds that usually accompany portable fans. In Boost mode, the fan measures 72.5 dBA, dropping to 68 dBA at speed 5 and a much quieter 52 dBA at speed 1. For context, normal conversation typically sits around 60 dBA, so the lower speeds should be unobtrusive during work or travel.
Holly Holmes, Dyson Colour Materials and Finish Engineer, said the team wanted to create finishes that connect with different moods and settings. “With HushJet Mini Cool fan, we wanted to create finishes that evoke emotion and context. Bold contrasts for confidence, deep tones for sophistication, and soft hues for calm. It’s about making engineering personal.”
The HushJet Mini Cool fan comes in three colour combinations: Ink/Cobalt blends cobalt blue with ink blue for a bold yet elegant look suited to city environments. Carnelian/Sky pairs a vivid matte red with sky blue for a fresh, cooling aesthetic. Stone/Blush offers a soft tinted white with delicate pink tones, inspired by mother of pearl for a calmer appearance.
The fan comes with everything you need to start using it straight away: a Neck Dock for hands-free wearing, a Charging Stand for desktop use, a USB-C charging cable, and a Travel Pouch for storage and portability.
Dyson will also offer optional accessories for those who want more flexibility. A Universal Mount can attach the fan to items like prams, while a Grip Clip securely fastens it to bag straps or jacket pockets, giving you additional ways to carry and use the fan throughout your day.
