Twitter today announced a free instant SMS and/or push notification to your phone whenever someone mentions you with @mentions. You’ll then be able to respond instantly. At this stage, the push notification is only available on Twitter for iPhone, but other devices will follow.
To turn Twitter’s free SMS notification on, go to twitter.com/devices and follow the steps.
I was trying this earlier but couldn’t manage to go through the verification stage. Basically Twitter asks you to send an SMS message from your phone to validate.
The number was, however, not in a valid Australian phone numbers’ format, so my mobile phone gave me a fail message when I tried to send it across. Not sure whether it’s probably because of the wrong network too (I’m with Vodafone but there was only Telstra appearing on the network selection list).
For now, I’m happy with the push notification on the iPhone’s Twitter app.
