Overwatch 2 is going BIG this year with updates that go beyond the usual cosmetics and events. This, is the new Overwatch

Blizzard has announced The Reign of Talon, marking the first time Overwatch will tell a complete narrative arc across an entire year. Running from Season 1 through Season 6, this interconnected story brings 10 new heroes to the roster, with five arriving when Season 1 kicks off on February 10.

I think this is one of the best updates in Overwatch as they are introducing different major stories every year in the Overwatch world and that the story will be reflected as you play the game: through voicelines of the characters, updated maps (like when they update the Halloween or Christmas themes) that evolve as the story continues, comics, trailers, and related in-game events. I really like that. Overwatch has a really rich story and it’s hard when you can only wait for new hero trailers to be able to experience something new.

To kick off the Season, here’s their latest trailer for the background story:

Five New Heroes Join Season 1

Season 1 introduces Domina, Emre, Mizuki, Anran, and Jetpack Cat. Each hero plays a direct role in the unfolding narrative as Vendetta strengthens her forces. Here are the snippers of each new Hero:

Domina (Tank)
Vishkar Industries’ heiress and vice president. Her partnership with Vendetta has secured lucrative redevelopment rights for Talon-controlled territories. She’s the first true poke tank since Sigma, using advanced Vishkar technology for long-range control and zone dominance. Her kit includes the Photon Magnum beam weapon, a segmented Barrier Array that requires destroying each section individually, an explosive Crystal Charge, and Sonic Repulsors that stun enemies against walls. Her ultimate ability, Panopticon, imprisons enemies in a hard-light barrier that detonates after expiration.

I’m all up for a new tank and I really like playing the versatile Sigma, so looking forward to trying out Domina. Plus, I’m good with tracking (I think).

Emre (Damage)
A former Overwatch Strike Team member who left when the organisation lost sight of its mission. Now enhanced with cybernetic modifications that seem to cause mental conflict, he’s aligned himself with Vendetta. His fast-paced run-and-gun style centres around a three-round Synthetic Burst Rifle with zoom capability. The Siphon Blaster gives him a temporary life-stealing pistol with enhanced mobility, and his Cyber Frag grenade adds explosive damage. During his Override Protocol ultimate, Emre transforms into a living weapon capable of rapid explosive blasts or charged mega-shots.

Looks to be more versatile and deadly than Soldier 76 but a bit more complex.

Mizuki (Support)
He comes from the Hashimoto clan, a Talon-aligned organisation. Years of pressure within the clan hierarchy have shaped him into a key player, though questions remain about whether he’s truly suited for this life. Currently tasked with infiltrating the Yokai near Kanezaka, there’s concern he might be influenced by them or drawn toward Overwatch instead. His Spirit Glaive bounces off walls and rapidly damages enemies, complemented by his Healing Kasa hat that bounces between allies. The Katashiro Return ability lets him leap forward and teleport back to a paper doll marker, and his Binding Chain hinders enemy movement. His Kekkai Sanctuary ultimate creates a healing zone that absorbs incoming projectiles.

I like playing Support that also damages at the same time and being rewarded for it. Plus, a hard-counter for the annoying Doomfist and Wrecking Ball in game? Yes, please, I hate them so much.

Anran (Damage)
Wuyang’s older sister (we knew she’d be coming when Wuyang was revealed!), harnessing fire powers in combat. Confident and hardworking, she holds others to her own high standards and joined Overwatch to save the world and keep her brother out of trouble. Her Zhuque Fans shoot fiery projectiles, amplified by her Fan the Flames ability. Inferno Rush propels her forward while damaging enemies on impact, and Dancing Blaze strikes nearby foes during a damage-dodging phase. Her dual ultimate abilities include Vermillion Ascent when alive (charging forward in an explosive impact) and Vermillion Revival when dead (self-reviving in a fiery explosion). Anran will be available early through a Hero Trial beginning February 5.

I don’t normally play flanker heroes but she should be a worthy addition and her ultimate is so cool too.

Jetpack Cat (Support)
We have a monkey and hamster, why not cat? Found as a stray in Gibraltar, this feline hero brings quick reflexes and a dangerous kit to fights. Her Biotic Pawjectiles heal allies and damage enemies, and Lifeline mode lets her tow an ally for increased movement speed and healing. Frenetic Flight provides acceleration in any direction, fueled by her permanent Jetpack passive. The Purr ability creates a pulsing area heal with increasing frequency, knocking back enemies on activation. Her Catnapper ultimate dives toward a ground location, knocking down enemies and tethering the nearest one.

Looks to be a Utility support kind of hero which will bring chaos to the battlefield. Like the fresh change.

Role System Overhaul

Season 1 introduces sub-roles for Tanks, Damage, and Support heroes. Tanks split into Bruiser (reduced critical damage, movement speed at low health), Initiator (airborne healing), and Stalwart (reduced knockbacks and slows). Damage heroes divide into Sharpshooter (critical hits reduce ability cooldowns), Flanker (enhanced health pack restoration), Specialist (elimination-based reload speed increase), and Recon (detect low-health enemies through walls). Support heroes now fall under Tactician (excess ultimate charge carries over), Medic (healing allies also heals you), and Survivor (movement abilities trigger health regeneration).

Casual players can safely ignore this in a sense (you can just pick a hero and play, without having to remember what the benefit of the sub-role is) but pro players would take advantage of this for sure. Hard to get through the game thanks to all the knockbacks and slows? just switch to a Stalwart hero, etc.

Conquest Meta Event

The five-week Conquest event lets players choose between Overwatch and Talon factions. Each week brings lore-tied missions, with rewards going to the faction completing the most missions successfully. Players can switch allegiance after completing their current faction pass. Rewards include 75 base lootboxes, 12 epic lootboxes, 7 legendary lootboxes, 9 new voice lines, 31 2D cosmetics, 2 weapon charms, one faction-themed legendary Echo skin, and exclusive rare, epic, and legendary titles.

This sounds really fun and should make some players returned to the game again to play.

UI/UX Refresh and New Features

After 10 years, Overwatch receives a major UI/UX refresh covering the lobby, play cards, navigation, hero gallery, and social panel. A new Notification Hub consolidates important updates, and Season 1 features a 3D lobby displaying the selected hero (expanding to show all group members in Season 4).

New systems include a Praise feature using hero voice lines for positive feedback (recorded over the past decade but never properly implemented until now), and enhanced sound/music control settings for lobby environments. Post-Match Accolades return later this year with full 3D hero models and new recognition types including multi-endorsements and Heroic Endorsements.

I really miss the post-game endorsement cards and glad to see it making a comeback!

Competitive Year and Stadium Updates

A new competitive year begins with Season 1, bringing a competitive reset and the Crimson Wolf competitive weapon honouring Talon’s new leader. Diamond-or-higher players earn a new Doomfist competitive skin. Competitive titles now have rarity applied, and Top 500 players receive dynamic titles for their finishes.

Stadium welcomes Vendetta to the lineup and changes Competitive Stadium’s pace with power rounds running 1/2/4/6 for faster, best-of-seven matches. The new Hero Builder provides recommended builds based on worldwide player data, offering three popular starter builds in round one and counter-recommendations in rounds 2-7.

Hello Kitty & Friends Collaboration

From February 10-23, Overwatch teams up with Hello Kitty & Friends for a crossover event bringing six themed hero skins: Juno as Hello Kitty, Kiriko as Cinnamoroll, Mercy as Pompompurin, D.Va as My Melody, Widowmaker as Kuromi, and Lucio as Keroppi.

Season 1 also includes faction-themed skins tied to The Reign of Talon narrative, plus bundles themed around rainy days and Valentine’s Day. The lootbox pool refreshes with all regular shop skins from the last six seasons.

Two new Mythic hero skins arrive each season this year, starting with Mercy’s Celestial Guardian and Juno’s Star Shooter in Season 1. Mid-season adds Mei’s first Mythic, with future seasons bringing Mythics for Soldier: 76, Illari, and Mauga, plus Mythic weapon skins for Genji, Hanzo, and Sojourn.

Esports Integration

The Overwatch Champions Series begins this weekend with a Seoul Bootcamp before Opening Weekend on March 21, culminating in World Finals in China. The Overwatch World Cup returns with regional qualifiers before the main event at BlizzCon in September. Players can earn historic Overwatch esports skins through the new Esports Lootbox by watching select broadcasts. Open Qualifiers registration runs until February 20, and Overwatch Esports now integrates with Top 500, awarding FaceIt event invitations based on Challenger scores.

Season 1 of The Reign of Talon begins February 10, with Anran’s Hero Trial starting February 5. Overwatch 2026 brings more heroes, story content, and gameplay updates than any previous year in the game’s history.

Super excited with Overwatch and the future of the game! I can’t believe that it’s been 10 years that I’ve been playing this game almost daily.

In the meantime, here’s my latest Overwatch highlights while reviewing the CORSAIR SABRE v2 PRO gaming mouse:
