Edifier has launched the MR5 Studio Speakers in Australia, targeting music producers, video editors, and anyone who values accurate sound reproduction in their daily listening. These aren’t just regular speakers as engineering behind them reflects a serious approach to audio fidelity.
The MR5 speakers are built around a three-way driver configuration that includes 5-inch long-throw woofers, 3.75-inch mid-range drivers, and 1-inch silk dome tweeters. Each driver gets its own dedicated amplifier through a tri-amped active crossover system, which means the tweeter, mid-range, and woofer operate independently with their own power and frequency band. This setup dramatically cuts down on noise and distortion compared to traditional single-amplifier designs that try to handle everything at once.
One of the more interesting design choices here is the down-firing woofer configuration with side vents. It’s an unconventional layout for speakers in this size category, but the engineering team has clearly prioritised extracting maximum bass response without increasing the cabinet footprint. The frequency response spans from 46Hz to 40kHz, staying flat across the spectrum to deliver neutral sound that doesn’t colour the original recording.
At 110W RMS output, these speakers have enough power for near-field and mid-field monitoring applications, while also handling medium-sized rooms without breaking a sweat. The custom-designed dimpled tweeter waveguide is worth mentioning as well, as it extends high-frequency clarity and widens the sweet spot considerably. This means you get consistent, accurate sound across a broader listening area rather than being locked into a narrow position.
For connectivity, Edifier has covered all the bases. The MR5 features low-noise balanced XLR and TRS inputs for professional audio interfaces and mixers, alongside RCA and AUX inputs for more casual setups. There’s also a headphone output socket built in, which is handy for late-night sessions. The speakers support 24-bit/96kHz resolution through their premium analog front end and Class-D amplifiers, ensuring precise signal conversion and accurate amplification.
Wireless connectivity comes via Bluetooth 6.0 with Hi-Res Audio Wireless certification, supporting the LDAC codec at up to 990kbps and 24-bit/96kHz. Multipoint connection is supported too, and it works with Android 8.0 and above. Beyond the hardware, the Edifier ConneX App provides room acoustic compensation settings, dual preset sound modes, and customisable EQ options to fine-tune the speakers to your specific environment.
The Edifier MR5 Studio Speakers are available now from Officeworks for A$399 in Australia which positions them competitively in the active studio monitor category for home and professional use.
