Aqara has officially brought its 2K Doorbell Camera G400 to the Australian market, offering homeowners a wired solution that prioritises continuous operation over battery-powered convenience. The G400 combines Power-over-Ethernet capability with on-device AI processing and support for multiple smart home platforms, positioning itself as a solid option for those after reliable doorbell security.
The camera captures 2K resolution footage through a 165-degree ultra-wide lens with a 3:4 aspect ratio, which means you get a complete view from head to toe. This vertical framing works well for doorstep monitoring, capturing everything from a visitor’s face down to parcels left on the ground, which is particularly useful for those of us who receive regular deliveries.
Power delivery comes through two options. You can run Power-over-Ethernet, which handles both power and network connectivity through a single cable, or connect it to existing 8-24V doorbell wiring and pair it with dual-band Wi-Fi 6 support on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. Either way, the setup enables 24/7 recording without needing to swap batteries or worry about charge levels dropping at inconvenient times.
The G400 handles motion and person detection directly on the device itself, which means alerts keep working even if your internet connection drops out. You can configure custom detection zones to monitor specific areas like your front path or porch, and receive notifications when someone enters or exits those zones. For those wanting more advanced features, Aqara’s HomeGuardian cloud service adds face recognition, package detection, vehicle identification, and animal recognition. There’s also an AI-powered video search function that helps you locate specific events without scrolling through hours of footage.
Smart home compatibility covers the major platforms including Apple Home with HomeKit Secure Video support, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings. The doorbell also supports RTSP and ONVIF protocols, making it compatible with network video recorders and other third-party systems, so you’re not locked into any single ecosystem.
When someone presses the doorbell, you receive an instant video call on your phone with two-way audio functionality. If you can’t answer immediately, customisable quick-reply messages let you respond without picking up the call, which comes in handy during meetings or when you’re occupied.
Storage options give you control over where your footage lives. The G400 supports local recording to microSD cards up to 512GB with automatic backup to a NAS server if you prefer keeping everything on your own hardware. Alternatively, Aqara’s HomeGuardian service provides cloud storage with up to 90 days of end-to-end encrypted recording.
Privacy features include video region masking and voice modification during two-way conversations. The camera carries an IP65 rating for outdoor use and includes a tamper alarm that triggers if someone tries to remove the unit from its mount.
The weatherproof IP65 rating means the G400 can handle rain, dust, and Australia’s harsh sun exposure throughout the year. Installation options include both adhesive and screw-mount hardware, plus a 15-degree wedge bracket for adjusting the angle. A wireless chime unit comes included in the box.
The Aqara 2K Doorbell Camera G400 is available now exclusively through the Aqara Australia online store with an RRP of A$199. There’s currently a launch promotion running from 11th to 25th May with special pricing at A$149, which represents decent value for those looking to upgrade their doorbell security with a wired solution.
