The latest Apple iPhone, the 16 Pro Max, showcases impressive AI capabilities but remains vulnerable to drops despite its enhanced durability. Allstate Protection Plans, celebrating its 25th anniversary, recently put the new device through its paces in their renowned Breakability tests.
The iPhone 16 Pro Max boasts the largest display in iPhone history at 6.9 inches, coupled with advanced AI features like contextual Siri, AI-driven writing tools, and image generation. Apple claims it’s their most durable iPhone yet, featuring “latest-generation Ceramic Shield material that’s two times tougher than any smartphone glass”.
However, Allstate’s drop tests reveal that while the device has made strides in durability, it’s not impervious to damage. In a face-down drop from six feet onto a sidewalk, the 16 Pro Max’s display shattered and eventually went black, rendering it unusable. The back-down drop test resulted in a shattered rear panel and damaged camera housing, though the device remained functional – an improvement over its predecessor.
Jason Siciliano, vice president of marketing at Allstate Protection Plans, noted, “As smartphones enter their AI era, they’re also entering a new era of durability. Advances in design, materials, and technology over the years have made them less susceptible to liquid damage. And yet, as their capabilities grow, and so do the size of their glass displays, they’re still vulnerable to screen damage.”
Given the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s starting price of $1,199 and potential repair costs of up to $749 without AppleCare, Allstate strongly recommends using phone cases and screen protectors. For added peace of mind, consumers might consider a mobile protection plan.
It’s fascinating to see how far smartphone technology has come, especially in terms of AI integration. However, it’s clear that even the most advanced devices aren’t immune to the laws of physics. As someone who’s had their fair share of phone mishaps, I can’t stress enough the importance of protecting these expensive gadgets.
