A slim, portable drive with impact & shock resistant + IP55 rating – SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 Review

SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 Review – SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 is a slim, high-speed portable storage that can fit in your pocket and store big data. Available in different capacities for your needs, you can opt for grabbing the largest one, which is a whopping 4TB of space!

With 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speed, you can store your media files in the drive and work on them directly to save time.

Note that this speed is achievable only through USB 3.2 Gen 2 (either on a USB-C or USB-A interface). If you don’t have a USB-C, the packaging includes a USB-C to USB-A adapter for compatibility. For example, you may own a modern motherboard with USB Type-C interface but the other PC you plug the drive to may not have one. This way, you can always use the Extreme Portable SSD no matter where you go.

It is also backward compatible to USB 3.0 so you’ll get a speed hit but you can always use the drive on any system.

Using CrystalDiskBenchmark software, I could get around 1022MB/s read and 915MB/s write speed using the USB-C interface and USB 3.2 Gen 2 with the adapter. Using the USB 3.2 Gen 1 slot at the front of my case, I got 445MB/s read and 410MB/s write speed. Mind you, this is still a fast drive with that stats – considering even a SATA internal hard drive inside your PC would usually offer around 500MB/s read speed.

My friend, who was a professional photographer, used to plug a bulky, 1TB external hard drive to his MacBook for his photography editing needs – and sometimes when he’s doing a casual video editing. I could see many progress bars and loading animation each time he’s doing something with his file. If you’ve been doing this for some time, it’ll definitely be a huge performance upgrade for you once you grab this drive.

Design-wise, its thickness is less than 10mm with built-in shock and vibration resistant and a surprising IP55 rating (for water and dust resistance). While it’s not exactly waterproof (i.e you can’t submerge it into water), it has a really good water-resistant from “low-pressure water jets” which should include rain or even a thunderstorm.

There is also a 5-year limited warranty included which should give you the peace of mind to take it with you on your travels.

With a carabiner loop, you can secure the drive on your backpack, belt, or a keyring if you want to – but probably grab a smaller USB flash drive for that.

Thanks to the NVMe technology, SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 offers fast transfer speed to save you time and its durable silicone shell also protects the drive from bumps and drops. With an IP55 rating and extra protection layer, plus its slim size, it’s definitely that slim-and-portable drive that you may be looking for. It’s also available in 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB storage capacity.

The 1TB SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 retails for A$289.05 at Amazon Australia.
