Snap2PDF review – Scan documents with your phone and convert them to PDF

Snap2PDFSnap2PDF review – Ever been in the situation where someone hands you a document when you are not in the office and you feel like you just want to convert it into a PDF file rather than having to carry it around? Or perhaps you can’t be bothered connecting your scanner to scan only a single document?

Well, if you have an iOS device (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad), you can actually use it to scan the documents (by taking photos) and convert them into searchable PDF files, thanks to an app called Snap2PDF.

With Snap2PDF, you can:

  • Take a snapshot of a hard-copy document and convert it into a PDF
  • Edit the snapshots, including a cool Gamma Correction feature which makes the results shine (as if you are scanning from a real scanner)
  • Fix the snapshots with some basic tools (cropping, skewing auto-corrections, etc)
  • Manage them into categories
  • Scan a single or multiple documents (which will be bundled into a single PDF file)
  • Use the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) feature to get a block of text from the scanned documents to be used on an email or other text-based apps
  • Make the PDF searchable
  • Upload the scanned PDFs to Dropbox
  • Attach them in the email

Snap2PDF also works if you have the 2-step verification process on your Dropbox.

The interface is pretty sleek though it may take you a while to figure out which icons are doing what at first. It also has some features to help you fix the skewing errors you make with the Image Dewarping and Image Rectification functions.

I’m actually quite impressed with the “scanned” results at the end. I have to be honest that I was a bit skeptical with this kind of app at first. I mean, what’s the difference between buying an app and taking a photo of the document with the built-in Camera app? Thankfully, I was wrong and convinced how cool this app is.

I actually used the app to scan a W-8BEN document (taxation form) and send it to an advertiser, rather than using a real scanner. I’m amazed at how easy it was and that the auto Gamma Correction makes it look like a scanned document with a real scanner.

I had an option to fix the scanned document (Cropping and other editing functions):

The OCR and making the PDF searchable are not perfect though when I tested. The app can’t get them 100% correct but if these aren’t compulsory for your needs, than the app should be sufficient for you.

Note that I could easily fix that scanned result (by re-taking the picture or trying the skewing correction features). Nevertheless, the results were amazing and taking a snapshot with the camera is quick and easy. The PDFs are also compatible with other apps and can be opened on my PDF readers (both in my iPhone 5 and on the desktop).

For an easy quick scanning in the future, I’m definitely going to use this app with my iPhone.
