Not so Quiet: Photos of HTC Droid DNA on Verizon leaked

Note: This is a guest post written by Nancy Perkins

Officially announced last October in Japan, the HTC J Butterfly is now coming to the US under the moniker HTC Droid DNA. At least that’s what the photos tell us, if we put two and two together.  The perennial leaker on Twitter, @evleaks, recently satiated our desires for clean photos of the HTC Droid DNA phablet, but with an ubiquitous Verizon logo just on top of the screen.

You can recall that invitations for an HTC/Verizon event were recently released early November. The press event is set for November 13, 10:30 AM in New York.  Looking closely at the leaked photo, you’ll see that the phablet’s wallpaper matches the background image featured in the invitation, so you can safely assume that the event will be the unveiling of the HTC Droid DNA. You’d also notice the date on the photo, which shows December 7. We might be presuming too much here, but we think that December 7 will be the perfect release date for the phablet.

In case you missed previous rumors, the HTC Droid DNA will run on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and has a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor. It will also have a massive 5-inch 1080p display that’s presently sharper than the rest of the market at 440PPI, complete with 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, and 4G LTE connectivity. Other sources have said that while the HTC J Butterfly sported an 8MP camera and 2020 mAh battery, the HTC Droid DNA will have a 12MP shooter and 2500 mAh battery. Other sources have said that it will have an 8MP camera at the back and a 2MP camera at the front. Additional features expected are an expandable microSD slot (up to 32GB), Wi-Fi 802.11, Bluetooth 4.0, and Beats Audio. One thing we really love about this solid-looking device, aside from the specs, is its vibrant red hues.

If this is the real deal, the HTC Droid DNA comes at a very opportune time, just right for Black Friday and holiday shoppers. More importantly, the news comes right after the Taiwanese phone maker’s most recent investor report , which shows that revenues have dropped to $17.2 billion Taiwan dollars, a 61-percent fall from revenues of $44.1 Billion in October of last year.  HTC has been experiencing a financial slide since Q4 of 2011. Total numbers for 2012 is $246.2 billion, just more than half of the $408.5 billion it made around the same period in 2011. It had a spectacular run in Q3 of last year, with company reports showing increased profits of 68 percent and a net income of about NT$18.68 (around $624.6 million).

Despite its “quietly brilliant” tagline, it seems that being quiet wouldn’t do it for HTC at this point, as competitors Samsung and even LG, ramp up their games. Perfect timing and whole new slew of high-end and much awaited devices—the Windows Phone 8X, Windows Phone 8S, One X+, and now, the HTC Droid DNA—will hopefully be HTC’s saving grace before the quarter ends.
