WordPress 3.2 Beta 1 – what’s new?

WordPress 3_2 beta 1

This news is for bloggers who blog with WordPress, the best blogging platform ever (P.S: Craving Tech is powered by WordPress). I wasn’t expecting a new version release so soon but as the WordPress’ blog mentioned, it’s actually been almost 3 months before the previous major release (WordPress 3.1) and it’s the time again for the next update.

I updated my other blog, Write For God, with WordPress 3.2 Beta 1 to check what’s new and took some screenshots.

WordPress 3.2 changelog (according to the official blog post):

(1) Improved performance

Just when we thought we needed to try other methods to optimize our WordPress blog, the team made an update to improve the core engine. Honestly, I couldn’t really tell the difference after I installed WordPress 3.2 Beta 1 but there might be a few things that got optimized behind the scene and it’s still a good thing.

(2) Full-Screen editing overhaul

The latest WordPress has improved the full screen feature on the post’s visual editor screen. Unfortunately, nothing happened when I tried to click the Full Screen button on the editing toolbar (I tried in both Firefox and Chrome). It may be a JavaScript clash with some of my WordPress plug-ins perhaps?

Anyway, I’ve never found a need to use the WordPress’ full screen feature as I mostly write with Windows Live Writer.

(3) Update to Admin UI

Buttons and menus are improved (visually) and although this update is not crucial, it’s still a nice addition especially if you have to look at it every day.

(4) Twenty Eleven theme

This will be the default theme in WordPress 3.2 (Previously, it was the Twenty Ten theme).

I’m pretty happy with my Thesis theme/framework so I probably can’t be bothered using this new theme but some of you may want to use a cleaner and minimalist theme.

(5) Notify when you have an outdated browser

Not really too exciting but I guess WordPress was designed to make it easy for non-techie users to blog, meaning they might not understand or aware to always update their web browsers. This update will ensure them to always use the latest and greatest version of their favorite web browser.

(6) More links  on Admin Bar

If you are using the Admin Bar (I disable mine), the new update adds more links into the admin bar for even quicker accesses to certain WordPress admin’s menu & sub-menu.

Just be careful when you decide to upgrade as things may have bugs or issues. I haven’t found any issues yet on my other blog with WordPress 3.2 Beta 1 (apart from the Full Screen feature but I haven’t really explored the others thoroughly). The Fluency plug-in (highly recommended) does not work properly on WordPress 3.2 Beta 1 so you have to wait for an update from the author if you still want to use it.
