I just got an email from SMSDiscount that all SMSes send to Australian mobile are now free! That’s right! I actually tested sending an SMS and keeping an eye on my credits left. SMS was received instantly, and my credits were still the same!

The catch? Hm… on the SMS rates page there are these notices:
** SMS Discount reserves the right after a certain amount of SMS to start charging sms for the default rate.
and FREE SMS is available for users with Freedays.
So my guesses are,
- There are certain "limit" that you are allowed to use. Meaning, sending hundreds of SMSes in a day are questionable.
- FREE SMS is available for users with Freedays, meaning that you need to recharge your SMSDiscount account every now and then. Whenever you recharge (the minimum at the moment is 10 Euros or around AUD$16), you will get 120 Freedays.
Since I use SMSDiscount to send SMS to my girlfriend overseas, I’m okay with this. However, if you sign up to SMSDiscount only to get the FREE SMSes, then you may want to reconsider whether spending 10 Euros to get free SMSes for 120 days is worth it. Of course, you can also use the credits to make VOIP phone calls (using your mic and internet to make a phone call) and also more SMSes at a very good rate compared to your mobile carrier’s rate.
