My blog was hogging the server?

by Michael Aulia on 6 March, 2008 in Blog Related

I just got an email from my hosting provider:

Hi,

Your account is utilizing excessive resources, causing a significant degradation of services on the server. This is a shared environment and we can not allow one user to utilize the majority of the resources on a server as it affects all users adversely.

The server log says that the site was utilizing
CPU: 6.51 %
Memory: 2.17 %
Mysql: 0.5 %

Top Process %CPU 66.0 /usr/bin/php
Top Process %CPU 60.0 /usr/bin/php
Top Process %CPU 32.5 /usr/bin/php

I either have to act to solve this issue or have to upgrade to a dedicated server. Not sure what’s happening.. hopefully it’s not because of a crazy StumbleUpon drug traffic earlier on the Battlefield  Heroes’ post (about 10,000 traffics in a few hours). I also turned on a weekly schedule WordPress backup about an hour ago (a plugin). This can be the culprit too if the script is unstable.

Will update this post soon. I’m currently exchanging emails with the tech support to find out what’s going on.

You may want to try a wordpress called WP-SuperCache. It reduces the load on your server by generated html pages so WordPress wont have to dynamically generate a page each time a user requests it from the server. Its known to ‘digg proof’ your server… I have noticed it actually does help my blog with about 1500 pageviews a day (faster load times).

Hey xorsyst!
Thanks very much for telling me about the plug-in. I’ve heard about it before but never paid any attention to it!

I’ve installed it and have tested to make sure everything works and my readers are getting the HTML file instead of dynamic one! It looks fine here.

You deserve a hug :) Now let’s wait & see what my hosting says..

Off to bed now..it’s almost 2 A.M and I have work tomorrow, oh dear..

Lucky you! Or … unlucky? :D

I never have such high spike before.

The highest I got was like 1,300 page views per day from Stumble Upon.

PC Games: Battlefield Heroes – Free to Play – 15,508 views

15k page views! Nuts! Totally amazing!

7k visits + page views first day!
6k visits + page views second day!

Awesome! Just totally insane w00t!

I doubt that a blog will take a lot of resources on a server unless it was being dugg (or reddit). You may want to check your plugins. Make sure that they are updated. A lot of blogs being exploited are through outdated plugins.

If that doesn’t helps, then I would suggest getting a VPS server first rather than a dedicated server. Much cheaper but you have the same control as a dedicated server.

Seems that the issue is fixed now. My account will still be monitored for 24 hours though lol

@Lloyd: It’s because of the StumbleUpon traffic (roughly similar like Digg and Reddit traffics). I have this “phobia” to always keep things updated, so yeah, the plug-ins are all up-to-date ^^

@Deimos: I know dude, I was shocked to see it as well. I was excited and panicking at the same time lol

@Entrepreneur: I’ll post something in 1-2 days about the cache plug-in. Will try to give some numbers/statistics too

UPDATE: Hm..one of the process is still using 30% of the CPU (Top Process %CPU 30.0 /usr/bin/php) I don’t know where that comes from though :(

My blog was hogging the server last week and my blog is now on a temporary server. I tried to use the WP Super Cache but somehow it’s didn’t work. So I decided to use WP Hyper Cache. The CPU usage remains high. I am clueless, so what else can I do to lower the CPU usage? Thank you.

Hey Steve,
Welcome to the club! hehe

I’ve already sent you an email to discuss further and try to see what may go wrong with your WP Super Cache installation!

Wow, a week of many unpleasant nights hehe

Well I guess I was lucky since the author of WP-SuperCache himself, Donncha, helped me out at that time.

Sweet dreams, Steve :)
