Massive Google Maps update brings offline maps, lane guidance, and more

Google Maps iPhone

Google Maps on iOS and Android got massive updates today, bringing the iOS app version to v3.0. Why should we get excited for just a mere update? That is because this update brings huge new features to Google Maps.

Google Maps is still the most popular turn-by-turn navigation app of choice on my phone. It’s there when I need it and has an option whether I want to avoid tolls or not (something that Apple needs to add on their Apple Maps app). Sure, there are limitations on Google Maps compared to a full-blown GPS system like the Navman MY450LMT, but it’s easily accessible on the phone.

With the last update, however, it gets better. Much better. From the update changelog, Google Maps now offers lane guidance while navigating (so you’ll know which lane you should be on rather than leaving it to the last minute). You can also save offline maps, a handy feature if you know where you are going to (such as a long day trip) so you can save the whole trip on the phone (this feature was already there previously but required a trick to be “activated”).

You can also access iPhone or iPad contacts directly on the app, rather than having to open the Contacts app and copy-paste the address. There are other exciting things too so make sure you grab the updates today on your iOS or Android phone.

Unfortunately, the lane guidance is only available in United States, Canada, and Japan at the moment (source).
