Christmas is approaching and everyone has been busy trying to compile a list of gifts to buy for their loved ones. Though it’s better to give than to receive, how about giving yourself a nice little present this Christmas? Everyone wants a tablet nowadays and the iPad is still the number one device on the list.

When the iPad was being released, there was no other way to buy it except by paying outright from the shops. This time, though, you can apply for a 12 or 24 months contract (like when you apply for a mobile plan). Vodafone Australia is currently offering a few options to get an iPad 2 (Wi-Fi + 3G) with $0 upfront fee, which is great if you don’t have the hard cash to pay for the whole amount but want to distribute them in a month-to-month basis.

Current iPad 2 offers from Vodafone

vodafone plans

For an iPad 2 16GB (Wi-Fi + 3G, 24-month plans):

  • $45 with 1.5 GB of data per month (total of $1,080)
  • $59 with 6 GB of data per month (total of $1,416)
  • $69 with 12 GB of data per month (total of $1,656)
  • $79 with 14 GB of data per month (total of $1,896)
  • $89 with 18 GB of data per month (total of $2,136)

Is it a good value? Well, if you buy the iPad 2 outright from Apple Store, it will cost you $729 for the iPad 2 16 GB with Wi-Fi + 3G. That leaves you with an extra cost of $1,080 (24 month contract) – $729 = $351 in total, over 2 years.

So $351 / 24 months = $14.62 per month extra but you get 1.5 GB worth of data each month. I personally think that it’s quite cheap and especially if you need more data, you can add just an extra $10 per month to get the 6 GB’s plan. It’s definitely a better option if your financial is tight as you can spread the cost in smaller amount per month.

The original iPad was my gadget of choice back in December 2010 because it’s intuitive, easy to use (even a 2 year old can), and was set as an example to the technology industry. Now, almost every gadget company manufactures their own tablet. If you own another iOS device like an iPhone or an iPod Touch, you can also share the same applications (not all) so you only need to buy them once.

My best 2 iPad apps that I use the most are Evernote and Flipboard. With Evernote, I can write notes on the iPad and easily auto-sync it to Evernote online. Notes will always be accessible where ever I go through a web browser or any other mobile devices. It also allows you to clip images and other funky things if you need them.

With Flipboard, the application compiles your Facebook, Twitter, and your RSS feeds into a sexier magazine style format. This is definitely the coolest free app ever and it makes me want to read more and more feeds. It’s also the best app to accompany you when you are doing number 2 in the toilet :)

Have you got a tablet yet? Will you be getting an iPad 2 this Christmas as a gift for yourself or loved ones?
