Razer Megasoma Review

Razer Megasoma is a hybrid of a hard and a soft mouse mat; If you love the softness of a soft mat but want to have the speed of a hard mat, Razer Megasoma delivers (this is debatable and I guess more like a personal preference). Razer Megasoma sits somewhere in between, combining the best [...]

FREE Domain Name and 1 Year Web Hosting Contest

by Michael Aulia on 4 August, 2008

in Freebies & Deals

This will be my first contest on this blog. The prizes are quite simple:

  1. The winner gets a 1 year free of domain name (your choice of .com/.net/.org) and a 1 year web hosting Standard plan from think411.com.
  2. *UPDATE* Another winner gets a 1 year free of domain name (your choice of .com/.net/.org) and a 1 year web hosting U.S based Starter Plan from HightekHosting.com.au.
  3. *UPDATE* Another winner gets a 1 year web hosting Basic Plan from Lunarpages.com (and a domain name of .com/.net/.org). Refer to my latest update about the contest post here.
  4. The 4th winner will get a 2 week of free advertising on my sponsors area (125×125 ad).

So what do you need to do to get the prizes?

I’m not going to use a point system on this contest (where you get points on doing certain tasks which will increase your chance in winning).

However, to be eligible for this contest, you have to:

  • Subscribe to both my RSS feed and Email subscription.
  • Help spread the word about this contest on any social networking site of your choice (Digg, StumbleUpon, Mixx, Twitter, etc)
  • Comment on this post that you’ve done above.
  • Simply be noticeable on my blog throughout the contest!
  • That’s it!

The winner won’t be random, but I’ll select people that I notice the most during the contest period!

The contest will end sometime in August and the winners will be reported on my post :)

FAQs:

Q: How can I be noticeable?
A: Many things! Good quality and frequent comments on my posts, by writing a post about this contest, by bringing referring traffic to this post, and many more – be creative!

Q: Why do I have to subscribe both your RSS and Email feeds?
A: RSS – so I can keep track of the subscriber numbers easily through the counter. Email – to make sure that you are not just subscribing to an RSS feed reader that you’ve never opened/read!

Q: Why aren’t you telling us when the contest will end?
A: This is to make sure that you’ve been reading my posts throughout the contest. I’ve found a few favorite blogs because I’ve been forced to read their posts through their email feeds before. I hope by reading my posts throughout the contest, my blog can be one of your favorite too!

If you’ve been loyally reading my posts throughout the contest, then you’ll know when the contest is going to an end :)

That’s it! Good luck!

Dear Michael,
you know, when I saw this contest today on a blog, my first thought was a calm OMG OMG OMG OMG I can’t believe it, free web hosting just when I wanted to start my own blog!
This can’t be a coincidence, it’s my chance!
But when I saw that it’s been running for a while, I became a little angry, then I decided to participate anyway and do anything I can.
So here is what I did so far:
Subscribed through RSS and e-mail

Hi! Firstly, let me thank you for hosting this wonderful contest, where you have a great chance to win depending on how much effort and work you put into this, and not based on some random choice.

Before I get into how I advertised your blog, I have two questions. Firstly, I subscribed to the email feed as asked, but for the RSS feed, how will you know if someone subscribed if they use something like Mozilla Firefox with just an add on that notifies the person of a new blog post?

That means that you have to use one of the online services, like Google Reader, right? Well, in any case, I subscribed with Mozilla Firefox plus Google Reader just in case – happy? :D And another question – what if we want to advertise more after we post in here – do we post another comment on this blog post or what?

And now for how I helped spread the word! Firstly, I’ve posted news of this contest on this popular forum, where a great number of people warmly responded to the thread. Simply read it here: http://xrl.us/advertisement01. Notice also that I changed my signature to advertise this contest. :D

Next, I posted an entire blog entry dedicated to your blog on my website, SeekersFan, which can be seen right here: http://seekersfan.webs.com. And no, I didn’t just make this website in five minutes just to post a blog entry – proof can be seen on the actual site itself!

Then of course, I obviously Dugg this blog post under the username Feabionsu, and, although unfortunately have no way to check this, sent an email to each one of my friends, spreading the word about this blog (and contest).

And finally, I signed a few popular guestbooks of my favorite fan sites, one of which can be found here: http://xrl.us/advertisement02. Look for the green logo with the letter S. And that’s it for now! I’ll be looking for more creative ways to get your contest publicized – until then! :D

All right, another scoop on me “helping spread the word” about your contest! :D This is for both today and yesterday, since I worked on the articles yesterday evening as well. What articles you ask? Check them out!

http://xrl.us/advertisement03 – A Knol article, Google’s new thing!
http://xrl.us/advertisement04 – And the same article on good old Squidoo!

It took me half a day to put that all up – partly because I worked pretty hard on them and had to learn a bit of Knol and Squidoo along the way. And partly because in the middle of my Knol article, my computer went crazy, which resulted in the deletion of my entire article in progress. :-(

But anyways, I got it finished didn’t I, and that’s the important thing! Hope you like them, but most importantly, hope other people find them and like them enough to visit your blog! I also put up another Digg about your second blog post about this contest – the one that announces we now have THREE prizes!

You can check it out here: http://xrl.us/advertisement05. Hope some of you digg it (perhaps you could put it up in the blog post please?) so that other people may find it! :D

I don’t think the URLs will be counted as backlinks to my blog because the URL is not pointed straight to my post/blog’s URL (I’m not sure, though)

Thanks Michael (and Yan too)! And you know, you were right when you said you discovered some of your favorite blogs by having to read through them, Michael. Not only to I get all the cool tech news, I got to know YOU better too – but we owe that to Plurk as well, hey? :D

And well, I /do/ try to get noticed – I mean, it’s not like I’m going to deny that I really want that domain name, because I do! xD It’s a great contest, the best of all the free domain name contests I’ve looked for and gave up on – and I gave up on a lot of them – so it’s worth to be making such an effort for me if I actually do win.

And now that Michael’s giving away TWO free domain names, to two winners – it just makes it all the better. It just means that there’s another winner, another person who’s not going to be disappointed by whoever wins the first domain and will be also jumping on his bed!

Anyways, about the questions – there’s two reasons why I shorten the links. For the ‘advertisement01′ and ‘advertisement02′ and so on – that’s just because it just makes it easier to read the post, rather than pasting super long links that break halfway through the post and go on forever. And it only takes me a second (Metamark’s the best shortening link website!). And it just looks nicer on the comments than an extra long link!

As for the actual link that I give out to people, the one that’s also shortened (http://xrl.us/onxhr) there’s the first reason of course, that when I paste it in an email or anywhere else, it just looks nicer and it saves characters when there’s a character limit.

The second reason is that I /am/ hoping that it counts as backlinks – the url is a direct link to this blog post. It redirects yet, but Metamark doesn’t take you to their own page where they say “WARNING: this url redirects you to http://www.cravingtech.com/blog...”.

I don’t know, but when I use StatCounter for my freewebs sites, it always says if the visitors use http://website.webs.com or http://freewebs.com/website or a shortened link like website.tk or .co.nr. So in a way, I’m hoping it does the same for Michael, so that he can tell where his visitors are coming.

And again, it’s just because it looks nicer and I love Metamark! :D By the way Michael, did you like my article on Knol/Squidoo. Like I’m not talking about how much visitors find your site through it, just talking about the actual article itself…

Oh and about my username on Plurk and over here – since you mentioned it – want to know how I got it? From the verification code I used to sign up on YouTube! :D Well, I /did/ want something original, and Feabionsu sounded like a cool nickname… so there you go!

Sorry I write so much, but I can’t help it… Hope that answers all of your questions anyways!

Okay, time for another daily scoop. Since hearing the news today that Yahoo Buzz finally opened up it’s beta to everyone, and seeing how each one of your blog posts has a “buzz” button, I thought I’d buzz as many recent blog posts as possible – considering that their offers aren’t expired or that they aren’t just your blog statistics!

All in all, I’ve submitted seventeen of your blog posts to Yahoo Buzz, and all of them can be found in my “Buzz Activity”, right here: http://xrl.us/advertisement06. Some of them didn’t get buzzed up yet at all, but two of them, one about your Gmail skins, and the other about the ALT attribute got buzzed up five times already!

Which of course compared to other people’s buzzes isn’t much, but seeing as I only posted them today… And anyways, I hope as time goes by and more people visit your blog, they’ll take the time to buzz up your posts as well. Which is the whole point of this thing – to make your blog and this contest more known, so don’t worry, one of those 17 buzz submissions IS about the contest… :D

I also submitted your entire blog as a whole to Yahoo Buzz as well, as well to Digg.com. You can check it out here… http://xrl.us/advertisement07! Submitting individual blog posts is good as well as spreading word about the contest, but telling people about simply your blog and what it features I thought was a good idea too.

Lastly, I made little cards on the computer that told people about your contest – a screenshot of what I did can be seen here: http://xrl.us/advertisement08. As you can see, I duplicated the cards, then printed three copies (that’s 30 small cards) and cut them out.

So where I did I put these cards then? Did I hand them out to people on the street?! Of course not! I’m not THAT desperate! But I /did/ go to my public library, believe it or not, which ten minutes walk away thankfully, and put them out in visible places for people to see – on the keyboards of free computers, on the tables where one reads, on the armchairs where people sit – and even on some of the shelves where computer books are put!

It might seem crazy, but hey, it actually works! You have to see with your own eyes how people notice the piece of paper lying on their computer keyboard and pocket it after reading it! Maybe not every one of my cards had such attention – but I tried! :D

Now that I think about it, I should’ve taken a picture with me at the library and one of those cards at the shelves! Maybe tomorrow – I have lots of ink in my printer left, so nothing’s stopping me from printing and cutting out more of them! :D And as you can see, this is one of the cases where my link shortening actually helped me!

Like Rjani, I too plan to use some more social sites like digg and facebook, paste the link in some more forums, and answer some yahoo questions – but for now, I’m focusing on my more creative ideas, since I have inspiration at the moment! :D Yep, creative ideas like cutting up little cards… xD

It’s actually fun coming up with all these new schemes to popularize this contest and your blog! I hope it’s actually helping you at least a bit – I doubt you get hundreds of visitors because of my little cards or me posting your blog on Digg; but I do hope it does get you at least a little bit of traffic! :D

Until tomorrow’s scoop then!

@Feabionsu: I believe if not for the Olympic, the whole world will be watching you NOW. But Mike will watch with a BIG smile if you don’t shorten the urls as I’m pretty sure it will not count as inbound links.

Anyway, it’s your call to decide what’s good for you and what should be more good aka better for Michael.

Wow! That must be like the best compliment someone ever game to me! Thanks again for all your support Yan! :D It’s really appreciated… and yes, I’m starting to doubt the usefulness in the shortened links too – but perhaps they /do/ count in Michael’s stats? Michael – will you that question for us once and for all? :D

Well, in any case, the shortened links still lead to Michael’s blog, so it’s not like they’re stopping the traffic, hey? I am wondering… how did YOU get a domain name Yan, since we’re talking about them so much because of the contest! :D Did you just pay for it? Do you have to renew it every year or do you have it for more. Perhaps for life?

I’ll be sure to check out your blog as well, since it never occurred for me to look at it – I’ve been busy advertising THIS blog, so you can imagine… But I’ll be sure to take a look!

@Michael: I’ve actually visited your other blog, Write From God or something like that, and I have to say, it’s pretty interesting! I discovered it through your Plurk profile – actually, I owe Plurk a lot of things nowadays! – and I read that story about the bamboo and the fern….

But I can’t comment! I don’t know why, but it keeps saying something about anti-spam word… So you’ll have to excuse me from comment on that blog…

Back to the topic of contests – I’m meeting so much new and interesting people since I joined in this contest! Spending all my time on this blog has certainly got me to know you Michael, and you Yan better and a handful of other people too! I’m really happy! :D

@Feabionsu: LOL, yes it certainly points back to Mike’s site, thus driving traffic to his site but it will not be counted as backlinks. I think as webmaster, we are guilty of wanting the best of both, if you know what I mean….

I begin to realize why you have to win this contest. I check on your site and it’s hosted by webs.com. I wouldn’t say that it’s a bad idea but you are serious about preserving your online profile, get yourself a domain (www.feabionsu.com is good) and keep it for life if you can. After all, it won’t cost you anything more than $10 a year.

Good luck, pal. Though I’m in the contest, I think you deserve it more than me…unless I know how to write comment as long as yours…:-)

Ah yes, I know what you mean about wanting the best of both! Though, since I haven’t been running a blog for years like Michael or you probably have, can your remind me the advantages of backlinks or inbound links or both, and what exactly they are?

As for the website that my username links too – I kind of gave up on it. Fans of the book series it’s based on still check it, and I do update it now and then, like with the contest – but you get bored of book series. And anyways, I have much better plans for the free domain name I hope I can win.

http://www.feabionsu.com is good, but preserving my online profile? Meh, I’m not too crazy about stuff like Facebook, YouTube, and other networking social sites – and I’m not as interested in letting people know who I am and my interest and everything, as I am in sharing the content I plan to write.

You’re right about the http://www.yourdomain.webs.com – it’s actually Freewebs, and it works if you’re just doing a small fansite about something or maybe a blog (though for that, I’d choose blogspot) – but for something big like I’m planning, that not only a few fans of the series will visit but a bigger, more general audience, you really need to represent yourself with a official .com. Or at least a .net. No .orgs for me! I’m not an organization!

And the new .me domain name? Urggh – definitely not! It’s good if your domain name is taken, since with a .me you now have the opportunity to register practically any domain name you always wanted, since it’s still new and not everything is taken… But obviously the other choices are much better!

As for simply buying a domain – I know it costs only 10 dollars a year, but the problem is, I don’t have a PayPal account! Well, actually, I did register, but I have no idea how to connect my bank account to it yet, and anyways, I’m not too trusty when it comes to giving your debit/credit card numbers…

So yes, http://www.feabionsu.com would be awesome indeed – but what would I share with the world that people would want to read and keep reading the next day? Of course, in a sense, it might be more useful than anything else, cause I would be able to post anything I want, rather than sticking only to one subject. But I’m not planning to write a blog, and like I said, if you ARE sticking to one subject, which I prefer, rather than having just an online profile where you stick everything together; then you really need to represent that subject with it’s own domain.

You’re in this contest too? Sorry for being surprised, it’s just I ddin’t realize that, since I don’t see any comments saying how you helped “spread the word about this contest” as Michael puts it! And also, I knew that you already had a domain name, so it never came to my mind that you might want another domain.

Well, of course every one wants a free domain – it’s free, and you have nothing to lose! But not everybody has the content, and it really does take work to keep two websites running! And also I didn’t realize that, because you kept commenting how /I/ should win it! :D

Oh, and my posts are long because I love responding to people who give their honest and thoughtful opinions on a subject, rather than just writing one line. My friends ALWAYS complain that I write emails too long – because obviously, they care more about using smileys and chatting…

Oh man – today’s scoop is a good one indeed! From one point of view, it might seem short or like no work at all, but really – you have to imagine how much time I spent on this. More than five minutes I can assure you that! :D

Today’s luck number is ten – that’s right, ten Yahoo questions about getting free domains answered, ten of your most interesting blog posts buzzed up on Yahoo Buzz, and ten questions answered at BlurtIt.com, a service similar to Yahoo Answers – but with more people, and more questions about domains of course!

Now I understand the buzz thing isn’t exactly related to the contest – but if people find your blog, there are big chances they’ll find your contest – and if not, at least you’ll still have another loyal commenter perhaps, another loyal subscriber! :D

The links! Coming up first is Yahoo Buzz… Oh, by the way, I have to tell you about something I don’t like about Buzz – perhaps you could blog about it Michael? It’s the history – you don’t get your own page where you can see all your diggs, you just get your “Buzz Activity” – the last 20 things you did with Buzz.

So some of my more successful buzzes about your blog have dissapeared from my username. Of course they’re still there, but that’s just a sucky thing I found out about Buzz. And practically the only sucky thing! :D Okay, now the links:

Stop Hotlinking – http://xrl.us/buzz02

Introducing iRing – http://xrl.us/buzz08
System Mechanic 8 – http://xrl.us/buzz09
Photoshop Tutorials – http://xrl.us/buzz10

As you can see, there’s some pretty old posts in there – that’s because I practically read your whole blog looking for worthy buzzes – for the best of the best of blog posts! :D I commented on many of them too – oh and I also buzzed your newest blog post, about Video to MP3 website converter – http://xrl.us/buzz11 – I guess that makes 11 hey?

Okay, onwards! Now with the Yahoo Answers! Mind you, Rjani did a pretty good job of cornering many of those still open questions – but I managed to get ten good ones answered nevertheless! :D Here they are in all their glory:

Question 10 made me laugh – look at it will you? :D Oh – glances at his bookmarks – and I guess I did some extra work!

http://xrl.us/answer11
http://xrl.us/answer12

And finally, for BlurtIt! Note: BlurtIt only allows people to answer once, and since there wasn’t any open questions left, I simply commented below – they still get a notification about comments!

http://www.blurtit.com/q650847.html

For the tenth one, I actually managed to answer an open question – the only open one I could find! – but unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be able to open. You can see the proof though under my “Achievements” in my profile, located here: http://www.blurtit.com/who.php?username=Feabionsu.

And if that isn’t enough, I plurked to all of my 30 friends about your blog (sorry, I already plurked about your contest – but that was when I had 20 friends, not 30!), but you probably already know that, having received the plurk yourself. Oh, and I also dugg that Stop Hotlinking post, cause I saw the “digg this” thing and though “great!”.

Hope all these answers, buzzes, and diggs suit you well! :D

Your friend,
Feabionsu
