Facebook Timeline on Facebook Page – What’s new? What to do?

Facebook Timeline on Facebook PageFacebook Timeline on Facebook Page – With the release of Facebook Timeline on our personal Facebook profile some time ago, it would only be a matter of time before we see a similar update to the Facebook Page (or used to be known as Facebook Fan Page back then).

Honestly, the Timeline on a Facebook Page is more sensible as you can highlight the achievements and events that your business had been through in a nice, readable format. Not to mention the lovely Facebook cover photo that you can place there.

The Facebook Timeline on Facebook Page will be rolled out on March 31, 2012 but you can turn it on now if you want to stay ahead of the competition (or if you simply don’t want to wait).

However, it’s better if you make a few changes first before you start rolling it live on your Facebook Page.

How to enable Facebook Timeline on Facebook Page

Simply go to your Facebook Page and you should see a notification bar on the top about enabling the new Facebook Timeline on your Facebook Page:

It’s recommended to click on the Start Tour button as you will need to adjust to a few changes before you publish (which may take some time to adjust to).

There’s a new Admin Panel on top of your page where you can view all recent activities on your Facebook Page. This is much better than having to click a few times to check on the Notifications and who liked your Page recently. This is located above your Facebook Cover Photo, which we will discuss next.

Just like your personal Facebook profile, you can insert a Facebook cover photo that covers the top of your Page. There are lots of businesses with creative cover photos so do your best here to attract the eyes of your fans. At the moment, you are seeing a photo of my gaming working area at home which is not even the most recent (forgive my laziness). I’m thinking to actually take a photo of some product line ups that I reviewed in the past, but yeah, stay tuned for that.

Underneath the cover, you can quickly have a glance of your Facebook Likes, the latest uploaded photo, and other apps that you can add + rearrange there.

When you have a visitor, the number of his/her Facebook friends who have liked your Page will also be displayed on the top. This would definitely bring new Likes to your Page! A small change but will have a big impact to attract new audience.

Some of you hate the new look of Facebook Timeline especially where they lay out the wall posts in 2 columns – which can be confusing at times. Should you find that you want a post to be wider and occupy the whole “row”, simply click on the “Star” to transform a post layout from:

to:

Facebook After

If you want to highlight/feature a wall post on your Facebook Page, there is also a “Pin to Top” option on the post editing menu:

For example, I’m pinning my iPhone 4/4S Case giveaway wall post to the top of the Facebook Page because there might be some people who didn’t see it when I published the wall post. You can feature any post that you like to encourage readers’ engagements.

One of my favorites is the Milestone, of course. As a business (including a blog), it’s important to highlight the achievements such as awards or any milestones. Before you set your Facebook Timeline on Facebook Page to go live, add as many past milestones that your business has achieved as possible. It’s also a great tool where you can reflect what you have done in the past and whether your business/blog is heading to the right direction.

Most of you wouldn’t know that I started to write my first post in 2007 and back then, there wasn’t even a Craving Tech :)

However, I also know some of you who have been following my blog for years – so if you are one of them, don’t be shy and raise your voice on the comment form. You deserve an applause :)

There is also a new Message system where your Facebook Page followers can send you messages to ask questions and all that. I turn this off though and I’m not sure if businesses would want to turn this on – there’s probably too much to handle already (Twitter, Email, Forum, Calls, etc). If you do turn this on, make sure that you (or someone else) are covering this.

There are surely plenty more to tell but I’ll let you discover it yourself. Will you be updating your Facebook Page to the new Facebook Timeline before the 31st of March? Make sure you’ve got a nice Facebook Cover Photo on your Page.
