Well, I didn't read, but I watched the anime before watching the first movie and I must say that in the anime, they make Yagami must more resourceful and clever. In the movie, not so much. Plus, the demon doesn't look so weird and menacing in the anime as he does in the live action. You should definitely read the manga or watch the anime!
