No, it’s not a high-tech tennis racket without a string (even though it’s kinda look like one from the screenshot). It’s actually the latest innovation from Dyson, called the Air Multiplier. It’s not a vacuum cleaner and it’s not a dryer. It’s actually an electric fan. A bladeless electric fan.

What? How does it work? Read on.

Why a bladeless fan?

The reason why Dyson decided to create a new fan without blades is because blades on conventional fans literally chop the air, which means uneven air flow, causing unpleasant buffeting. The Dyson Air Multiplier uses its patented technology to multiply air 15 times, expelling 450 litres of cool, smooth, and uninterrupted air every second!

How Dyson Air Multiplier Works

This is getting a bit technical, so I’m gonna quote from the official press release:

Air is accelerated through an annular aperture. This creates a jet of air which passes over an airfoil ramp that channels its direction. Surrounding air is drawn into the airflow amplifying it 15 times (this is called inducement and entrainment).

Dyson’s fluid dynamic engineers ran hundreds of simulations to measure and map airflow – allowing them to precisely optimise how the Dyson Air Multiplier™ works. The Dyson Air Multiplier™ is powered by an energy efficient brushless motor, so air speed can be precisely adjusted with a dimmer switch. Conventional fans are only wired to run at just two or three settings.

No blades means no need for a grille; so it’s simple to clean and straying fingers are safe too.

And because its motor is at its base, the Dyson Air Multiplier™ can be tilted with a touch, unlike a conventional top-heavy fan, which needs to be positioned with two hands and can topple easily.

I’ve always been disappointed by fans.  Their spinning blades chop up the airflow, causing annoying buffeting.  They’re hard to clean.  And children always want to poke their fingers through the grille.  More chopping.  So we’ve developed a new type of fan that doesn’t use blades.

No buffeting
The blades on conventional fans cause unpleasant buffeting because they chop the air.  Dyson Air Multiplier™ technology gives an uninterrupted stream of air that doesn’t distract or buffet you.

Hygienic
With its simple loop the Dyson Air Multiplier™ is quickly wiped clean with a cloth. Conventional bladed fans are nigh on impossible to clean, with dust and dirt building up inside the cage.  The same dust and dirt is then billowed into your face when the fan is switched on.

Stable
Unlike top-heavy conventional fans, the Dyson Air Multiplier™ has an energy-efficient motor is at its base, meaning it has a low centre of gravity and doesn’t topple over.

Touch-tilt
You have to use two hands to position a conventional fan. The Dyson Air Multiplier™ adjusts easily with a touch of the hand.  It pivots on its low centre of gravity and stays put.

Variable airflow
Conventional fans have limited settings. The Dyson Air Multiplier™ uses an energy-efficient brushless motor, which means air speed can be precisely adjusted up or down. The dimmer-switch control allows people to pick their perfect airflow.

One-touch oscillation
To oscillate a conventional fan you have to hold it steady, pull the toggle and watch it judder. Oscillating the Dyson Air Multiplier™ through 90º is simple.  Press the button.

Strong
The Dyson Air Multiplier™ is constructed from tough Acrylontride butadiene styrene – ABS (C₈H₈ C₄H₆ C₃H₃N).  ABS is a tough thermoplastic used to make light, rigid and moulded products.  It has shock absorbing properties and is used to make car bumpers, crash helmets and modern golf club heads.  It’s used in Dyson vacuum cleaners and Airblade™ hand dryers too.

If you have a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop, then there is a new laptop theft protection feature available for you. The theft protection feature is called ConstantSecure Remote Disable. It works by sending a text message (SMS) to the stolen ThinkPad laptop which will then disable the laptop completely (it will be powered off and a re-activation key needs to be entered whenever it’s being turned on again).

If a correct reactivation key is entered, the laptop will work again as normal.

Why bother? Because your data might be more important than the laptop itself. Even if it’s just photos or personal documents, you wouldn’t want them to fall into the wrong hands. Personal information inside the laptop can be used to identify you. Confidential data can be used to bring your company down.

The theft protection is a very handy feature but unfortunately only works on certain Lenovo Laptops:

I wish I have one so that I can try it myself Nevertheless, if you are thinking to buy a laptop (especially to be used for professional purposes), get one of the laptop listed above and install this theft protection right away! LG has just released a wireless Full HD LCD TV (on 42″, 47″ and also 55″) on its LH80 series. I’m not entirely sure that it is the first wireless LCD (and in full HD). Although I have to admit that I never saw one on any electronic store here in Australia. Guess it won’t be long before we’ll all have a fully wireless entertainment centre on our own home.
