8 Tips to promote your latest blog post for free

by Michael Aulia on 2 October, 2008 in Blogging

Blue mouse and a penSo you think that your latest post on your blog rocks? (If you think that every post that you write, rocks, then you have a problem :D ). Not every post that I write is lovable or interests everyone on the planet.

However, when you think that you have made a killer post, these are some good tips to spread the post around quickly and they cost you nothing. There is no point in writing a good post if no body knows about it!

How to promote your latest blog post for free

  1. Submit it to Blog posts’ directories.
There are so many of them out there now, where you can submit your blog posts for free; BlogEngage, Blogsvine, BloggingZoom, etc. Chance is that you should receive some visitors to the post, if the title is catchy enough.
  2. Submit it to social bookmarking services.
You know the drill. Just be careful not to submit your own post on some social bookmarking services that don’t allow you to. StumbleUpon is an example. You don’t want to submit your own post to it (Well once a while perhaps, but not constantly, or your site may get banned).
  3. Find those blogs with the “U comment I follow” tag and “spam” some comments.
Make a good comment on his/her latest post. When the owner sees your comment, he/she should drop by to your blog and comment on your latest post too (Well at least that’s the commitment of the “U Comment I Follow” movement). If the post is good enough, you might get a free pingback/trackback or a free stumble/digg/etc.
  4. Similar to above, find blogs that have the CommentLuv plug-in on them (like my blog).
CommentLuv plug-in displays your latest blog post below your comment. So, write a good comment as much as possible on these blogs and attract their readers to your latest post! Again, your post’s title must be catchy.
  5. Go to forums that display your latest feed and start replying threads.
DigitalPoint forum is one of them. Try to go to the right thread and start replying other people’s posts. For example, if you publish a post that gives a SEO tips, then reply threads that ask help for SEO tips. If your reply is good enough and they see your latest post’s titled “10 Best SEO Tips”, chance is that they will click on the link to read further!
dp 8 Tips to promote your latest blog post for free
  6. If you are active on Entrecard.com community, drop your card more that day to promote your latest post.
Most of the time, you should get a reciprocate drop. Even if there’s only 20% chance of those droppers reading your latest post, it is still worth the effort. You get credits and you can get a pitch on your latest post.
  7. Stumble, Digg, etc a post on other blogs and inform the owners that you did so.
Be genuine and really do it when you like the post. When my readers come and said in the comment that they like the post and have stumbled it, sometimes I go back to their blogs, read some posts, and if I really like a post, I do the same in return.
Don’t get your hopes up, but it is worth a try. Try not to “force” an exchange but let them find the value of your post. Begging usually won’t get you anywhere, unless if you know the blogger.
  8. Reply your readers’ comments more frequently on that latest post.
When people visit your blog and see that you have 20 comments on your latest post, it will generate curiosity. Curiosity is good. It attracts them to read your post to find out what the fuzz is all about.

Try not to do this on every single post that you make. Again, not every post that you do is a “killer post”! If you do this everyday, you might get tired and discouraged. I did these tips myself when I was promoting my post on Google Chrome some weeks ago. The result was good, but it was quite time consuming and tiring.

Remember.. marketing, marketing, marketing!

Michael, I agree with you. Commenting and marketing is very time consuming and I get pretty tired doing it on a daily basis. I wish I was more into net marketing during the 90′s and early 2000, it was a lot easier back then (think – keyword stuffing :) )

As you said – marketing, marketing, marketing!

Another tip, on Entrecard you can change your homepage to the URL of your latest ‘killer post’, so when people click your EC image, they will be taken straight to it and not to your homepage. They are more likely to read comments then too.
It doesn’t work for approved adverts though.

Great article, Mike. I have been doing all these but never putting any attention to doing it with my best post. It’s just a random kind of thing I do.

@Gigi: I haven’t even blogged yet during those era, but I’m aware of keyword stuffing done by some webmasters/bloggers :)

@Kouji & Dennis: Yeah. It’s both do-follow links and also an “oath” to comment back on you

@Richard: I saw some Entrecard members do it that way. I honestly don’t really like it though, but I guess it’s different for each person.

@Nihar: I usually submit my post to blogsvine and blogengage, although I only get around 3-5 traffic a day from them

@Hicham: Most (maybe all) of my Facebook friends don’t really read blogs lol so that may not work too well for me

@Ann: Just because I don’t get any traffics from Technorati :( I used to install the Technorati tag plug-in, but they only bring me around 10 visitors in a month O_o I guess I’m doing something wrong

Wenbin: Thanks for the stumble, buddy

Others: Thanks for comming over and commenting. Sorry can’t reply you all one by one lol

Thanks for the tips. I really need to incorporate some of those. The killer post idea is the one I struggle with most of all. I don’t have good promotion techniques, and the ones I use are equal among all my posts. Hopefully this will keep me from getting burned out.

Thanks Mike, great post.
Already incorporate most of theses tools – unwittingly – and have found the startup http://nudgeville.com and twitterfeed useful places to post a killer post. First read your article on Nudegville.
Keep up the great work.

Michael, these are great tips! Some I already know, like entrecard and the U DROP I FOLLOW stuff, but I didn’t even think about CommentLuv or some of the message boards or other tips you gave. I dugg you just because I’ve been wondering how some people are getting such insane traffic! Thanks for the informative post.

You are correct is saying that stumbling your own post is not a good idea but there is nothing wrong with stumbling, digging or whatever, a post that has linked to one of yours ;)

Also there are certain blogs, like mine that are part of the ‘You comment and I will follow and comment back on your blog’ movement. A mouthful, but a great way to get reciprocate comments.

True. I read that tip on a blog some time ago :)

Naturally, you want to make sure that it is a good post as it wouldn’t do your credibility any good if you stumbled a bad post.

Reply to this comment

Michael Aulia October 28, 2008 at 9:34 am

True. Although if it’s a bad post, then people might click on the link to your own blog, hoping to get a better information.

But yeah, your credibility might suffer because you’re stumbling a bad post (and with your URL on it! It attracts curiosity and negativity)

I think that you are confused on what the “u comment I follow” movement is. When you comment on a “dofollow” blog the “nofollow” tag on the comment link attached to the name is removed, so that google can see the link, and will help in page rank. It has nothing to do with blog owners making a recipricol comment on the other’s blog.
The nofollow tag is automatically on every blog, and must be manually removed or with a widget.
I thought that I would help to clear that up!
Cheers!

Michael Aulia November 5, 2008 at 10:33 pm

Oh! Thanks for clearing that up, Andreas. I guess it still is helping to promote the post, although in a different way!

Sire November 5, 2008 at 11:13 pm

When I first saw the “u comment I follow” I like Michael also thought that it meant that the bloggers would reciprocate the comments. I couldn’t work out why no-one was doing the right thing. Then it dawned on me and I figured it was a great failing on their part, which is why I started the F Group a group that promises to be part of the dofollow gang but takes it one step further by reciprocating comments.

Michael Aulia November 6, 2008 at 11:13 pm

Hmm interesting. I’ve never heard or seen the F Group before on the blogosphere. Is it new?

How To Make Money November 6, 2008 at 6:19 am

Great post. And some really good ways to. What I am finding out with commenting is that I am also building good relationships.

Anyway, one thing to add to this is article marketing… I think though for bloggers article marketing can seem to difficult and time consuming because we already write so much. But either use the article you’ve written and submit every 3rd one, or just rewrite the post and then submit is.

Michael Aulia November 6, 2008 at 11:16 pm

Hm I was writing a few on ezinearticles last time. I found out that duplicate contents are hated by Google. I guess rewriting the post and the submitting it might work, but how far will you go on rewriting a post?

Sire November 7, 2008 at 2:15 pm

The F Group is totally new as it is something that I am trying to get started. There are only a few members so far but that will change once people see the potential for increasing the amounts of comments you can receive on your blog.

When you start your blog it helps a lot if you can promote it for free. Promotion means getting readers to your blog, and since most of us start blogging just because it interests us, spending money to promote your blog is quite difficult. Fortunately, if blogging is free, or almost free, these 8 Ways to Promote Your Blog are Free too and these are really free blog promotion tools and tactics that you can implement from day one of your blog publishing. The list of free promotional tools have primarily been prepared from a web designer blogger’s perspective, most of the methods can be applied to all kinds of blogs.

Some really nice information there, you talk about social bookmarking, if you have a website too, I’d recommend submitting every page of your website to the websites, not just your homepage!
